New Version GWX
I have always liked the damaged euiptment look of SH3 dunno if thats the leet work of the GWX folks or stock ubi. When I say "damaged" I mean the crumpled AA Guns when damaged and the black smudges against the hull.
Im wondering if its not too difficult or outlandish, if they can be enhanced. I was looking at the photo of the salvaged boat (U534?) everyone is signing the petition to save. I was checking out her mangled aft section, looking much like a crinkled beer can, more than a submarine. Is it possible for the folks a GWX to recreate such a look fer our boats after we get dumped on. Adding more bends and twists? Maybe Im asking too much as I dont know how hard it is fer you dev types to put together these incredibly accurate and detailed ships landmarks, birds...etc. As an 1/35th scale military modeller mostly armor WW2 era, I know that weathering and damage add a great deal of realism to my tanks. Rust, mud and dust are a scale modellers friends. heh. Unlike in the real world. Anyway just curious. This is just an idea to push the perfection envelope of GWX. I AM IN NO WAY CRITICIZING THE PHENOMENAL JOB THAT HAS BEEN DONE TO BREATHE NEW LIFE INTO THIS GAME. Thank You for your time and effort. Now if you'll excuse me, my XXI U-2522 and I are going to attempt to make a run on Scapa. I have never been there and probably will never leave but.....

As to the damage, can't say, just a tester not a dev...
Beware the XXI ! it gives you a sense of ultimate power, it's one mean beasty, but you die just as easily. and going to scapa in 44 or 45, that's just silly ![]() If you insist on going to scapa, do bring back pictures ![]() |

The black smudge you speak off is the work of GWX, well it was a stock damage texture that was improved. Basically was done as a sort of a I dunno... "third way" because the game uses the same damage textures for ships and subs. So the black smudge was used to represent damage from depthcharges too.
As for mangling of metal... I could be mistaken but that would probably have to be SH4 territory:hmm: |

In SH4, the subs and ships have a basic 3d interior for the hull, the holes that appear are generated by textures just like in SH3, but rather than creating a black smudge it makes the area it 'invisible' its a clever little trick and at least allows for dynamic damage (whereby you will see holes where ever you have been shot) unfortunatly it doesnt work 100% of the time sometimes you get the hole - sometimes nothing.
![]() If SH3 was imported over to the SH4 engine it would certainly be possible to acheive these effects, i doubt it can easily be done in SH3 as it is but it might be possible. It would be a very tediouse job to have to model and import hull interiors for all the uboats and ships in sh3, could perhaps make 3 or 4 then scale/adjust them to fit each ship or sub... still would be a lot of work. The most convincing type of damage is true 3D damage (like the kind you see on crashed cars in many driving games) This is not dynamic has to be predetermined and modelled in advance (much more work than SH4s solution), you need a damage model system in place that tells the game engine to alter or replace apart of a 3D object/mesh according to where the it was registered by the damage model. With something liek this in place you could actually have things like a smashed up bow after a head on collision or deck plates missing after being shelled. Hell we could even have the Uboat break in half! AFAIK ships damage in Sh3 must have something like this in place - for objects on the the deck that can be destroyed with the deck gun. I expect this could be applied to the Player Uboats with great difficulty, but just imagine the amount of 3d work, hex editing and testing involved! it would be astronomical! ![]() ![]() Too complicated and time consuming, I guess thats what the Ubi devs thought too. Consideration for enabling a third damage texture to better allow for visual depiction of various weapon damage is being considered, but at the moment all devs with that ability are busy finishing up other matters. This mod is not considered high priority. Speculation leads to false impressions gentlemen. |
