Default Damage Not Showing?

Ok so my first mission in career mode I got into killing things in Tokyo harbour. 57000 tonnes sunk, and 5 aircraft. Actually it goes to show how lame the AI is when it comes to attacking ports...I mean at one point I even surfaced and started taking them out with my stern cannon. How ridiculous. But anyway I digress.............

So I got a fair whack of damage and repaired it all. I had no damage left that was visible for showing on the "Y" screen. When I got back to port I was busted by the brass for wrecking the sub, but since I did so well they gave me another one. This is confusing as I had no damage left??

First off... did you patch to 1.3 ? You might find the AI a little more 'responsive'.

There are some known issues with 'residual damage' not being clearly indicated.

Look at it this way, you got shot full of holes, your crew 'plugged' these holes but the holes are still there just plugged. Who knows they stuffed socks in them or whatever.

Technically the leak is stopped but its not truely repaired.

Hehe My bodgy sea repairs made it to port!

Yes mate Ive got 1.3.

I dont mean to be a downer cos I like the gun alot but frankly I find that the game didnt really meet my expectations. My reasons:

1. The game engine core is crappy. The graphics engine has problems with basic line of sight stuff. Meanwhile the rest of the industry has moved well and truly on.
2. The damage modelling and physics simulation is really bad. I was messing around and launched my spy on his rubber dinghy while I was still moving and it tore the top deck and parts of my side from the sub! Yeah right good one Ubisoft!
3. The shaders for the water is wrong. Cudos to the mod that fixes up the shader for the water. And the living breathing ocean mod. Great stuff guys. Just a shame that volunteers had to fix what Ubi failed to deliver.
4. Generally the quality isnt great. Like I ran into a sub in the Tokyo harbour and I get an error that the .TGA file isnt found for the sub. Also in my vista app event log I get an error:

Fault bucket 55823204, type 5
Event Name: RADAR_PRE_LEAK_32
Response: None
Cab Id: 0
Problem signature:
P1: sh4.exe

In general terms what I think the devs did on this project was take an out of date game engine from SHIII, give it bit of a tweak and wring some more dollars out of this brand.

I buy it like many of you I suspect cos we like subs. But frankly, theres far better games around these days and if there was better choice for subsims SHIV wouldnt survive.

Its my hope for SH5 or the next competitor will truly deliver with modern techniques and standards in a new landmark sub title.

All in all I think its a pretty damn good game with a few warts. Nothing new every game has is drawbacks.

More realism less eye candy was needed but that's water under the bridge now. I encountered a situation last night where my propeller shaft was damaged and when the crew fixed it all I could do was go forward or back, turning was out the question. Another career over with.

I look forward to a super mod in a year or two years time that will give us what we want, a real challenge just like GWX has done for SH3.

Vista is great. There's alot of people wearing tin foil hats that would have you believe that Vista somehow turns software into flakeware.....Thats not the case. Though I've been fortunate cos with Ati I missed the grief that Nvidia users had with poor device drivers - then again that isnt Vista's fault thats a problem with a device driver from a third party.

Anyway if you analyse what the app crash says its clearly a user mode problem with the application code not underlying WDM or middleware of vista. Vista does alot of great things that make it clearly superiour to previous desktop OS's MS has released but it wont fix app level problems in processes from Ubisoft...unfortunately

Yeah I like the game too mate. Though, I think clearly on the standard of games in 2007 this one smells of rusty previous title given a polish to make a few bucks without really having to do a big development project. The physics and the graphics elemnts alone are all 2004 not 2007.

Heres hoping the next subsim will be a great one that really lives up to what modern hardware can do these days.

Default Damage

Look at the Sub from external view, you might some damage.
Save game go deep to see if hull is good. Sometimes damage will not let you go deep ei: 100ft.
