Default game very slow in map mode

P4 2.8 HT
3 GB RAM
Nvidia 7300 GS 512MB reference drivers
XP Pro SP2

GW mod, don't know what version
game is VERY slow in map mode with compression especially with a convoy or task force around
is there a SH3 cache file I can defrag or anything like that?

This sounds familiar to some problem I had a little while ago. The game ran mostly fine but in the map I couldn't scroll it at all without it hanging for 20 seconds or so.

I'm experiencing a similar problem, except that it occurs only at max TC (1024x). Fps drops to single digit, usually 5 to 7. Usually I get frames of about 70 - 90.
Happened only recently, previously at 1024x I could get decent frame rates. Fps drops only when near convoys.
Using GWX 1.03.
Funny thing is, I started a patrol in 1.03 & all was working fine. Then mid-way thru' the patrol this happened. Now that I've started patrol #6, the issue remains.

Does it run ok at high compression with no convoys around? If so I wouldn't worry about it. SH3 is constantly updating ship positions and if there in a convoy near you, it has to update a massive amount of info 1024 times as fast (just a generalization there).

If you're trying to move your mouse around and other stuff at high compression then you are really taxing the system. All you should be doing at 1024X is watching the clock. Then if you get the instafreeze when a convoy comes around, well, I guess it's party time...

it happens even at slower speeds 64 and 32 x
I think the SHIII engine is not written too well to use RAM effectively

how can I check what ver game I run and what ver GW?

Well if you're using any kind of GWX then it requires you have stock SH3 patched to 1.4b. Secondly an SH3 install witha ny version of GWX has a splash screen that says "The Grey Wolves Expansion" and in the bottom right corner it'll say which version number (latest is 1.03). I forget what an older version of the splash with just regular Grey Wolves looks like.

The way I resolved it was by removing the GWX combined skin pack that you enable via SH3 Commander. It makes no sense but before that mod it ran perfect and with it it ran like that. Once I removed it, and only it everything was fine.

No explanation really.

You have to run game version 1.4 just to load GWX. If you loaded GWX in the last couple of weeks then it's probably v1.03 otherwise it's v1.02.

That said, there must be some other source of your slowdowns. My system isn't nearly as fast as your's and I have an ancient GeForce 6600 Ultra and my game never slows down unless I'm at 1024. Even then it's only when the convoys come within 25K meters or so. I'm thinking you may have some heavy duty apps running in the background sucking up your CPU cycles. There are many programs on the web that can shutdown unnecessary apps when you are gaming, so you might check that out.

Edit: What he said above...

Also proved that long plotting lines on the navmap will cause slow down in that view
Go figure

Been through hell and back! And mystery solved!

After arrival at patrol grid I suddenly had the stutter again! Thought something might have been screwed up, so made a fresh 1.03 install with my few tweaks increased Windows swapfile (just to be sure), defragmented all discs and rebooted before starting SH3 via Sh3Cmdr. Everything was fine, 70-80 fps in all zoomlevels in Lorient harbour with 19 ships. Once in open sea fps increases to 130. Test with lots of waypoints - no difference.
Save and exit, run Sh3Gen, reboot (to clear cache) and run sh3.exe without Sh3Cmdr (everything should by now have been generated). No difference. 80 fps everywhere at a minimum. Save and exit. Reboot.
Start this time with Sh3Cmdr (rolling back and copying files for minutes... ). All fine! 80 fps... heading for patrol grid CF49.

Then!

Had plotted some lines for ideas for a cruise around the islands... and that did it! zooming back to ship now shows fps drops to 3-5 in extreme zoom! Removed the lines - and we're back on +80 fps And none of the lines have to be of any perticular lenght. Just being there. Argh!

:rotfl:

Sorry for blaming GWX
