Man, back in the day I was earning $525 per month before taxes and that included BAS and BAQ.

Of course back then we were still fighting the Hun in Verdun <wheeeze>

E-5's that are also single parents still have it pretty rough, but it's a step in the right direction.

I know several guys who came into the military at E-2 or E-1 as the sole breadwinner for their families (1 or more kids), and they barely scraped by.

In my opinion, there is no way a person employed to defend a country should be "scraping by."

When I joined the Canadian Military in 1980 I was making about 650 clear a month. That was not a lot at the time. With the White Paper in the 1990s the military was looked at by the government and pay was raised substantially. I lived in Toronto and as a Leading Seaman (same as Cpl, not sure what American equivilant is) and with the bonus for cost of living, I made about 72k in 2002.


Retired now and trying to live off 20k a year

Maybe the USA soldiers should come to Australian Defence Force, all the bloody Poms are, our wages here are one of the best in the world not to mention what extra we get in the pocket when deployed on operations.

Many qualify for various kinds of assistance.

The Congress keeps up with inflation, every year. If inflation is 3.8%, they'll vote themselves a 4.2% hike. It is long since time to boost military pay. Although we've got a lot of other fiscal issues to tackle, too.

I'd like to see a large reduction in Army personnel. Offset it by recalling all of our military from Korea, Japan, Germany, Italy, Spain, Britain, and Kosovo. In fact, put them on our southern border. That's right around 60,000, almost half in the medical and supply services. Turn all ~2200 miles into a DMZ like Korea, and let the Border Patrol (Department of Transportation) do their jobs as customs agents at the designated crossings.

In summary:

-Increase pay.
-Decrease personnel ("downsize").
-Put all previously-stationed foreign troops on the south border.
-Profit.
-Construct a plan to secure our northern border before the drug cartels start running up to Canada and down.
-Use our remaining B-52's to drop DDT and mustard gas on the Forces Armed Revolutionary Columbia (FARC).
- Profit again when all the Hollywood actors and New York yuppies turn to self-mutilation because they can't get their cocaine fix, creating a huge glut of available organs for the medical field to sell to the highest bidder.

People don't realize it but in the grand scope of things the pay is crap especially so for junior enlisted. You can't save any money worth anything and when you do you have to spend it on the next change of station move.

I remember, and it ain't that long ago, many of my troops had to have second jobs to make ends meet. That's a crime in my book. I am not talking about young troops splurging all their money on stupid stuff, I am talking about serious mature adults who just could NOT make it on their own military pay.

As more and more bases were requiring young troops to move off base, the worse it got. I am not saying that E-1s should be rolling on dough but E-5s and below should not have to take second jobs just to get by

This pay hike doesn't kick in till January next year, but an E-5 will recieve ...

That's good pay for a single sailor, solider or airman ... married gets housing allowance ... true off base can cost you big time ,but I still think it's a lot of money. Especially if you go to sea on a submarine now days ... sub pay, special rates like nuc's get paid extra, plus clothing allowance and the 10% overseas saving plan (if they still have it)

you could be at sea for five or six months and have over $10,000 waiting for you.

I have seen grown (over 25 lol) submarine sailors spend three months pay in one week-end ... of course they were single.

Did your read the article about bonus pay for shipping over (staying in the service)? Up to $150,000 for sharp shooters ... not a bad way to go, uh?

Current active duty make more than enough to survive off of, and then some. Considering the gov't pays for moves of household goods (weight limit applies), you also get paid a rate for distance traveled.
Also consider pay when TDY, lodging, per diem, seperate rations, hazardous duty pay (demo, para, scuba, etc), combat pay, flight pay, re-enlistment bonuses, annual clothing allowance, ad nauseum.
Back in the '80's I lived on the economy in Germany, had my own apartment, got seperate rat's, but no special duty pay. In the 15 years I was in (early retirement during the "peace dividend") we never had a single airman who couldn't afford to pay their rent or feed their family. Why? Simple, they were expected to act responsibly when assigned to a critical duty position and did so (otherwise you were out the door).
