So we all see nice screens of sinking ship
but sometime we know when sinking an big ship...it can have its price

I'll Start

I was doing an fast career in the IXD2 in 1944
I catched an large convoy.
couldnt see sh!t....heavy fog...but I could here them Okay!
Closing....suddently Out of nowhere an Flower comes up! DAMN! He took me with suprise and the following thing happens

He shot something from its front an Ring of grenades? (Mortyr or something?)
He rammed my conning tower...
and Depthcharged me with all direct hits

(Now...pretty heavy damage for an Flower Corvette...late 1944)
I Survived the raping...but not for long...after I fixed every flooding...he came again and finished me off....

It's called a Hedgehog, or spigot mortar.

I've never taken that much damage (well, I've taken more, but I didn't survive). You'll probably get some replies from folk who've returned with as little as 4% left. Maybe less, but that's the worst I remember hearing about.

Ah now thats why i generaly prefer the type VII's, your chances of survival are often much better when things go realy wrong.

I don't have any pictures of it, but on a long patrol off the coast of Canada, I was hit by a destroyer and a Sutherland. Hull integrity dropped. I had to surface; got into a gun battle with the destroyer, sank it. By the end, my hull integrity was down to 2% and I managed to sail it all the way across the Atlantic back to home port and finish the patrol.

I have never recovered from that kind of damage. Ouch!

This one was fatal (mine outside Scapas western entrypoint or in the channel):

I just finished my first GW patrol, and on the way home, after an uneventful patrol (one measly little Tramp Steamer) I decided to sneak into Loch Ewe and see what was around (1939). Peeking through the periscope as I am creeping into the harbour I spy a Nelson Battleship bobbing calmly in the water.

Thats when I hit the Mine.... The damage to the ship was along the lines of Stabiz' photo above, except for the stern damage and dead crew. All of my crew managed to survive, after getting the flooding under control I decided not to press my luck and snuck back out. Lost the O-periscope and the Deck gun, hull down to 66%.

I don't have a screen but the most horrific patrol i had not so long ago left me with about 19 crewmen in a VIIB and hull was really low .However i didn't really manage to escape, but still
It was 1940 i think and I was returning from a not-so-juicy patrol with no ships sunk (except an english coastal vessel, but that doesn't really count ) and i was on the eastern coast of England returning to base.I didn't have anything better to do so i went twards hartlepool I Think or another port in that area.I sneaked in and found nothing .As i changed course (while being submerged) 2 v&w's and a C class came from no-where.I stayed submerged (but at low depth since i was relative close to the town).I was going silent with about 2 knts and was hoping they didn't detect me(I use NYGM so going silent isn't like a "cloaking" device anymore).Suddenly,I hit a ********g mine which caused some heavy flooding and hull damage .The pattern was sorta similar -coning tower/KDB /Radioroom blown to bits about 6 crew dead+about 3 rooms flooding really fast. Also, one of,one of the bateries got blown up so i had no electric power left.I had nothing to do than surface and try to make a run for it.So i surfaced and ,well, they saw me and started chasing.I put some men on the deck-gun and i managed to destroy the C-Class' guns and it backed away. But as soon as i did that my deck-gun got destryed and the watch-officer + the 3 men on the gun were killed. Then, one of the other ship's rammed into me ,while the other one was shooting it's cannons at me ,but it's aim sucked so he managed to destroy the guy ramming me.Then i only had one double-flack gun to destroy the v&w,and strangely enough i managed to destroy it's guns so it backed off.By now my subs was more limping in the water at about 5 kn rather than actually moving .After a few more km's i met a tribal ,and that guy finished me off(

Or the the other flys through the wall because of the shockwave and their heads collide and the other dies as well?
