Sound. But its tricky and takes a lot of practice. I've only been able to do it on slow single merchants
See greyriders sound tutorial.

Well, you can always try night surface attacks using the UZO.

Did you try the observation scope? (Never used it, but you could probably do more than observing ships...)

I'd break out the apple juice and head for home. If you can't sink 'em with the deck gun (provided you have one, and it's still serviceable), and you can't aim torpedos, it quickly turns into a 'cruise ship'.

Find a convoy
get in close at periscope depth (about 700ft)
Set the TDC to aim at 0deg
open all foward tubes
when the first merchant ship is at 350 deg fire all tubes

Your almost bound to hit a ship especialy if you have path following fish.
I have used this tactic before when a destroyer caught me before i had finished my TDC calculations and i sunk 1 and dammaged another

Hey letum, good idea. I guess that could be referred to as "shooting from the hip" eh?

Let me make a note of this, just in case I find myself in the same situation. Or, I'll just try it out on one of my "start a career just to try out stuff" patrols.
