Default Confesions of a Noob

I first must say I am so impressed with subsim, you folks seem to be a very friendly and helpful group. That said, you can see I am a Newbie to all of this sub sim stuff. I love SHIII, I am hooked. I have completed the academy ( mostly satisfactory marks), and started a career ( at 29% realism). I am having problems engaging targets on the nav map. Will the " Nav Course Map Solver" by Capt America mod be the ticket for that problem? Again the site is very exciting, and please be gentle on this new hand on deck....Tnx

Tnx for the reply...... I see the contacts on the map, try to navigate to the ship on the map, and then can't find it ( even though it seems I am darn close to the contact on the nav map).

Two hints that may help, one philosophical, the other practical:

Shooting a torpedo is a bit like shooting a gun, except in super-slo-motion. If the target is moving, you don't want to shoot where the target is, you want to shoot where the target will be. When you get to a distant contact on the map, if you go to the marker, the target is moving, and so will be long gone by the time you get there. The first thing you want to do with a distant target is establish its possible course and speed, plot that on the map, and then use that as your best guess as to where to go. One of my all-time favorite mods is Wazzoo's Nomograph, which is a tool that turns the mathematics of this business into a simple drawing application.

Click on this link for more:

The second piece of advice is to dive your ship and take over the hydrophone controls. Dive, then set the volume of the hydrophone by clicking on the volume knob and drawing the cursor in little circles. Then have the helm go to all stop. Then click on the big dial to move the needle around. If you are within 20 nm or so of a ship, you will hear its screws turning underwater. where the needle is pointing when you hear the screws is the bearing for the target.

Again, Thanks for the tips. I am still a little confused about the mods. I was under the impression Wazzo's mod is for the explict purpose of targeting contacts to use torpedos and thought " Nav map course" mod was for setting up contact ( in the distance) with enemy ships on the nav map. :|\

The link I provided it to Wazzoo's site, and on the site is the link to his Nomograph, which is also included in RUB. He explains everything on his site clearly and logically -- the Nomograph is extremely easy to use.

Thanks to all ...... Am I correct in assuming that Wazoo's nomagraph (mod) is already on the latest patch I loaded a few days ago, after initially loading SHIII off the DVD???

It might be. It's also included in RUB, and possibly other mods. I recall that some of the modded plotting tools made it into patches, with the blessings of their creators.

If you have 3 long parallel lines studded with tiny numbers on your chart, that's the nomograph.
