My last patrol I had finished my objective and headed to an area North West of Rabaul. My loadout included 6 Mark 27 Cuties. Now I have used them plenty of times before and never had an issue except for the occasional circular runaway.
This time it was awful. Not only did I have a 95% premature detonation or dud rate on my load out but ever one of my 6 Mark 27's came back after me. The first one I simply went down to 250 feet but instead of losing me and going after the intended victim it circled me. I went all ahead flank and steered a course toward the enemy vessel. I went all quite hoping it would then run towards the ship. It came right back towards me and circled. Every single Mark 27 this time only followed me. Even at dead stop, all quite and at 350 feet with an enemy escort doing 16 knots above me it only came after me. If I find out that Ensign Johnson was back there sharpening his bayonet and making all the noise to attract them I'm sending his bayonet home to his wife in a box. My failure rate on this patrol was incredible. Two out of 24 torpedoes actually hit the target and exploded. Everything else was premature detonation, duds and only two misses or they tried to sink me with my own fish. If I had been a boat commander in WW2 ... I would have been kicking someones ass no matter how many bars or stars he had on his shoulders. Watch out for the mountains boys!! I don't know much about problems with the Mk27s. I do know that once you fire them, you need to just about be at silent running or they will home in on you instead of your intended target. If you go flank, then you're just asking for it. In the case you described, they may have not been able to detect the other ships and remained on the course you set them on.

Dang. I've never had that bad of luck with the Cutie. Then again I go all stop, rig for silent and dive to at least 250 feet when ever I launch them.

While I understand your attempt at humor, what happened to the San Fran is not a joke.

@ETR
While I understand your sentiment, and having been in the Navy myself, I on the other hand do find it a joke that a conn full of NCO's, and Officers could use outdated charts to steer a billion dollar boat into an under sea mountain and kill a sailor who was doing his job. I had an XO who had that kind of arrogance. He ran us aground as well. Stupidity comes in all forms ... in the Navy it shows up in over confidence and lack of intelligence. ====================== As to the cuties ... none of them should have heard me. They armed at 500 feet, the USS Trout at all stop, rigged for silent running was making more noise than a 16 knot escort at 1800 yards that was directly in front of them. It wasn't even a circling issue. They came after me and stayed after me even all stop, rigged for silent running and at 350 feet. I only went ahead flank to see if they would follow me towards the target and then go all stop in hopes they would pick up the target noise but no such luck. Just a waste to only get two ship out of all those torpedoes.

No it isn't Torp. I would have had my men take those things apart and find the issues with ever waking moment they had.
There is nothing like having 8 escorts over you after having fired absolute crap to motivate them into making them work. I will say on my next load out I added another 6 cuties. I came across a task force with two Japanese Fleet carriers, a Fuso and the Yamato. I fire all 6 forwards at Yamato two being cuties but all missed her while two struck the carrier farthest from her. Lucky is sometimes better than accuracy. I fired all four at the Fleet carrier closest to my stern but all four missed and all the cuties chased the escorts as I had hoped but they kept their speed up so they all ran out of fuel before they could get close enough tot he target to detonate. After the escorts left the area I went to periscope depth and found the Fleet carrier I had hit dead in the water with a 50 degree list to port bow submerged all the way up to the super structure. I fired two more into her flight deck before she went down.

I have had a problem with a Cutie. I was at periscope depth and fired from the aft, and it detonated right then. Took out both my engines. Other than that, they've been fine for me at least.

@snarf ... the flank speed was so that the cuties would follow me in a general direction then go quite so they keep going forward of me to a target but on this bad run of them they only followed me ... no matter how deep, how slow or silent running or no they ONLY followed me.
First time a cutie ever heard me from dead stop, silent running at 350 feet. It was an odd bug.
