There was an interesting piece on the lunchtime news in the UK...if all goes well she'll be upright by the end of the day...there are still two bodies missing though.

This is the ship with the coward captain that ran away, and refused the CGs pleas to go back on board and be responisible for his ship and passengers?

Yechhh, good work to the salvage crews, but this duty shirking captain really annoys me.

This whole thing was preventable, and he could have even saved face if he stayed on board.

I think he claimed the company liked them to hug the coast to give a view, he may have had a chance with that claim if he stayed aboard.

The company distanced themselves from him in the end. Originally they were also going to pay his legal costs. Good move.
As for the hugging of the coast? Wrong. He changed course to do a 'close-by-coast salute', he later said that he was never aware of there being rocks present at that location and that his nav maps never showed them.

He deviated off course, in unknown waters. First mistake.

I won't go into the other mistakes he made after that.

They had a special news report on this on 60 minutes a CBS show several weeks ago saying that this had never been done before and how an international team of divers was used.

They said the operation so far had cost over $800 million dollars just to salvage the ship. You can build a new cruise ship for $700 million dollars or so.

This must have been a labor of love paid by the insurance company for the cruise line to get it out of that harbor in Italy

Well this is mor to do with not leaving a wreck that could be a potential environmental or navigation hazard- which in the article Feuer Frei! linked to is also a negative influence on tourism. I read or heard somewhere there was a worry about the ship breaking up with winter coming.

Mr. Nick Sloane has told to AFP that ship's hull is so badly rusted that it would not survive another winter nor there is guarantees that it will survive lift attempt.

Imagine what mess there will be in shoreline!

This operation they are running now, and the plan for how to continue, is one of the occasions where I witness myself staring at a building and observing something going on, and then saying to myself: it's amazing what humans can do, if they really want it.

I find the effort extremely impressive. Hope they do not get struck by misfortune.
