I actually saw this story reposted on a tech site.

Well, this is what you get when you try to cut corners. Notice how the design was commissioned, but much of the rights were actually owned by the airplane company. Its a common way of trying to get a discount. And now, the Germans are back to the drawing board, after all, you can't not have a drone these days.
