I don't usually go in for the whole "This day in history" thing, because so many things happened on any given day, but today is special. A lot of things happened on March 4, but I'll only give the ones that are really important to Americans.
Working backwards (and for a good reason)... On this day in 1933, President Franklin Roosevelt gave his legendary "The only thing we have to fear is fear itself" speech. 1917: Jeanette Rankin of Montana took her seat as the first woman elected to the House of Representatives. 1908: The New York board of education banned the practice of whipping students in school. 1861: The Confederate States of America adopted the "Stars and Bars" flag. I'm not sure if that's something to celebrate, but it is certainly significant in our history. 1789: The first Congress of the United States met in New York and declared the Constitution to be in effect. 1766: The British Parliament repealed the Stamp Act, which had caused bitter and violent opposition in the Colonies And on March 4, 1634, something happened that every American, and a lot of visitors should know - in Boston, Massachussetts, a man named Samuel Cole opened the first tavern in the American Colonies! ![]()
