"They will be kept in a secure location..."

Proper treatment for a dangerous book. It's sad but that is what it is.

Reminds me somewhat of the movie "The Book of Eli"

But what about the online editions?
What if the evil, imperialist forces of the Great Satan read it in the world wide web?
I demand that the DoD protects the book from dirty looks and restricts the acces to all websites that mention the word *****.
To prevent typing anything offensive I further demand to remove the 5 keys in question from all keyboards which are used by the forces.

Its not "classified". Its simply restricted from being diseminated through the US military chain of supply.

Nothing stops a servicemember in the US from going out and buying one. Nothing stops them from then burning what is then their personal property, provided they do not violate any local/state/federal burning laws.....

This memorandum only applies to those in theatre where the good light bird Albertson has such authority over Chaplains and religious documentation command.

Just saying.....

Yes, that is clear, but don't you think that it puts any non-Muslim member of the forces, who wants to have a copy of the quran, under the general suspicion that they only want to get it to do harm to the book and thus to the image of the US?
An atheist can get a copy of the bible, a buddhist can have a Torah, without permission of his CO.
I don't know to waht extent freedom of religion can be legally restricted in the military, but to me it looks like a double standard. Freedom of religion means also the freedom to read sciptures from "the other side".

Storing in a secure location is not even close to classifying.

I think you are just trying to stir stuff up here.

There is nothing in that letter that would lead anyone to believe that it involves classification.

TLAM, I read it the same way as Platapus did - intentionally inaccurate. I see (now) that you were exaggerating to make a point, and thats perfectly legitimate. Its all good, don't sweat it!

2 questions.

1) why is the dod handing out religious material to start with?

2) if so, why aren't all such texts, etc under the same rules?

So Muslims are the newest members of the protected class.

Congratulations. I would hum Pomp and Circumstance if I wasn't so busy vomiting.

We can't hurt their feelings anymore, we don't want them rioting.

I seen what American police did to OWS protesters, but we can't offend the muzzies, foreign or domestic.

Awesome country.

Catering to bronze age animals...

Decline of an empire indeed.

I should buy a quran, and use the pages to smoke pot out of.

I don't even smoke pot, but I would start just to have a Jihad called on me.

Is the bible protected as much? Hmmm? Torah?

You guys cant(except CaptainHaplo) read very well this memo was written by a Chaplin he seems to be the head Chaplin at Bagram in Afghanistan(judging by his rank he might be the head over all Chaplin in country)there are Chaplains for most of the major christian, Judaism.Islam,Buddhism at any base there will be one Chaplin in charge over all the others. The general literature distribution rack is a book shelf/shelves located at the various chapels(or one at a very small location) with religious texts like Bibles,Torahs, those annoying "guiding light" magazines.

What they are saying is do not give out a Quran to anyone not listed as a Muslim on their dog tags.It is a measure being taken in country to prevent another incident that will directly cost the lives of more troops. It is not protecting crazy Muslims it is to keep young troops not using their heads from doing something foolish that might result in the deaths of other troops. It is wise for our military to avoid incidents that begin from within make people go nuts and cause our own troops to get killed. What the memo should say is next time when you take a Quran from POWs using them to send hidden notes on the margins shred them in a classified document shredder!

The goal here is protect our troops.

I can tell that most of you guys where not in the military because you cant read memos fully attention to detail.

Yup. Translate it from military jargon to simple language, all that letter really says is, "We can't have you bozo's riling up the local's, so If you want a Koran, see the base chaplain".
