One theory is that the Chinese have rebuilt the streetgrid of target cities in the desert to run military excercises on them. Or targetting practice for drones, missiles - anything like that.
I saw a photo not long ago about these Chinese desert diagrams, where they had rebuild the streetgrid of Manhattan that way. ![]()
