Default Possible to change windowed resolution?

I'm using a widescreen monitor, and while I've got the game tweaked to fit my screen ration I'd rather play in windowed mode (I alt-tab out of the game often, and this causes sound problems with fullscreen).
Anybody know is a way to do this? I'm basically hoping to play the game windowed but at a res only slightly smaller than my desktop.

As far as I know if you play in windowed mode you're stuck with the game's native resolution. Tinkering with the res can only be done if you play fullscreen.

That said, if there is a way to play windowed at a higher res I'd love to know about it.

I run two monitors, usually the smaller on in 1280x1024 and the larger one in 1680x1050. When I run SH3, I just bring the smaller one down to 1024x768 and go windowed. Works out very well for me. It also seems as though the audio bugs from alt+tab stopped when I went to windowed mode.

That's a good idea I'd never thought of... especially using Display Changer, which would make it easy enough. Just set it up so the res automatically changes to 1024x768 when the game is running and reverts back when you exit. I use Display Changer and that option never even occurred to me!

Go into the properties of the shortcut. On the shortcut tab there's a RUN option towards the bottom. Selected Maximized to run the game in a full screen window.

I presume he's referring to the main game shortcut (usually on the desktop)...

Doesn't really work if you use SHCommander, though

Give it a try. When I used Display Changer to change my desktop resolution automatically whenever the Sh3.exe file was running, the way it worked was to edit the desktop shortcut. It still worked even when I launched the game through Commander. If something you do in the shortcut properties affects what happens whenever the file it points to is running, I don't think it matters how that file gets launched.

Fair enough, I'll give it a shot then

From Steam forums:

"For Silent Hunter 3!! sorry for missing that on the title!!

Just got this game free with Cliffs of Dover, I can't play in crappy res's!!

description here:
http://widescreengamingforum.com/for...ter-3-res-edit

I had to download this file:
http://www.gamefront.com/files/14597767/dx9res10.zip/

and extract it to a folder.
then edit the res as the post says, I used 1920X1080 though.
then copy the 2 files to the SH3 install STEAM folder.

works like a charm!!"

I did that and it really works perfect. Along with the Grey Wolves Super Mod the gate looks now awsomely nice!

How did you get it to work with Commander? I've tried several different programs and options and I cannot seem to make it work. I can get SH3 to load in the resolution I want it to via it's own shortcut -or- I can get Commander to load in the resolution I want SH3 to run in and it reverts as soon as Commander closes... but I haven't figured out how to "point" Commander to the shortcut that will load SH3 at the proper resolution. I'm pulling out what's left of my hair at this point... I'm so tired of manually changing the resolution...

Hi Yukon. Coincidentally, I tried this yesterday. I remembered I had deleted the "SH3 with GWX" shortcut from the desktop when I installed Commander, so I resurrected that shortcut (was still in the Recycle Bin), changed the properties and that seemed to do the trick. I remember that before I installed Commander, I had never tampered with that shortcut so Commander must have established somehow that it was the default shortcut to launch SH3, and now it still seems to remember it and apply the settings I want. If you can somehow track that original shortcut that was created on your desktop when installing SH3 or GWX, that should hopefully work.

I only tested it but went back to full screen as playing windowed -even maximized- cuts off the bottom 20 pixels or so of the screen (the part where you see the latest crew messages), but that's another story... will have to test this with a second output monitor.

I thought that too... but it would appear that Commander runs via sh3.exe itself. Still playing around with it - for now going to stop by my storage unit and grab an old 19"WS monitor and set it up. SH3 worked just fine on my old 3x19" setup (of course would only have it actually running on one) but on my shiny new 3x23" setup i have to back off the resolution to 1440x900 (19" native) for it to run and avoid the "Failed to Initalize 3D Engine" error...

Oh well... maybe I'll just build a "Legacy Tech" rig to run SH3 on... either that or switch to SH5 *GASP*

Hmm... don't know if it makes any difference but Commander shouldn't be pointing to a shortcut, it should be pointing to the game directory - the folder where the Sh3.exe file is located.

I have three different installations of the game and IIRC I was using Display Changer with all of them, they each had their own dedicated installation of Commander and it always worked fine.

OTOH I had to do a LOT of tinkering to get the game to run the way I wanted, at the desired resolution in fullscreen without being rescaled to a WS aspect ratio. Maybe there was something else I did that helped.
