Default Noob questions

Hey guys and gals,
I'm new here and new to this awesome game! I've got a few questions that have popped up after an hour or so playing through the tutorials.

1. I downloaded from steam, can't work out what version this is. Steam says there are no updates, but can't seem to see what version it is. Anyone know? Do I need to patch it to the latest version?

2. I keep getting messages saying radio message received, when I click on my radio officer to see message reports, he keeps saying there are no messages even though he has just told me there are??

3. I plan on installing the Grey Wolves mod at some point after I get used to the game. Can I do this with a Steam version? I'm running Windows 7.

On a general note, this game doesn't make it that easy to learn without a manual. The video tutorials are helpful as are the instructions before you go into the missions, but you have to remember them when you are actually doing the mission. Could do with a manual, but you don't get this with the Steam version

I've been looking for a great simulation game for ages that doesn't require big bulky hardware like a joystick or steering wheel and this fits the bill nicely, especially as I have an interest in German WWII history. Looking forward to learning this game!

Thanks in advance, nice to see there is still an active thriving community for this game.

Welcome!

1. As I understand it Steam has the latest version 1.4b. You can tell by looking in the lower right corner of the loading screen.

2. Press m to bring up the messages screen.

3. I understand you can but, can't tell you how as I'm running the old original DVD version on both Vista and Windows 7 with GWX 3.0. I understand with Steam you have to install it a little differently.

If you install GWX, you get a nice, huge manual to go with it.

Start up the game. While it's loading look at the lower right side of the screen. If it says v1.4 then you're good to go.

To see radio messages hit the 'M' key.

Yes. There are a couple of tricks involved which I can't explain, as I only have XP and have the disc version, which is available very cheap.

The manual that comes with the boxed version is crap anyway. But you do have it with the Steam version. Open the SH3 folder and look in the Documentation folder. On the other hand the manual that comes with GWX or NYGM will amaze you.

As you progress you will find that there are a world of mods that make it ever more realistic and fun (if your idea of fun is sinking a ship once in a while and then sweating in terror as they try to kill you and all you can do is run and hide. Mine is.)

And thanks to Neal Stevens there likely will be for a long time to come. Welcome to the best community on the web!

Wow! Such a quick reply from you all is fantastic, and all my questions have indeed been answered!

Running Version 1.4, so no problems there. Found the documentation in the game folder, having a so so manual is better than none at all! The keyboard reference card is very helpful.

Found the radio messages - thanks

Just another cheeky one - what is the contact reports option for?

Nice to know that I can install GWX and get a great manual too, I'll cross that hurdle when I decide to install.

Thanks again for all your great answers, this is indeed a great community!

D'oh! Once I saw Frau's name as the last to post I thought she'd beaten me to the answers again. But Steve was even more on the ball.

Welcome aboard

I'd recommend installing GWX sooner rather than later as it changes the game in a big way, for the better. Oh, and Commander.

Edit: The contact report is to report contacts of enemy shipping, if nearby other units like the luftwaffe will come and attack. From what I understand you have to be in visible range, surfaced and there has to be more than three vessels (but that may just be GWX). Safer keeping them all to yourself.
