I used to be able to start the war in a type IX boat, using GWX 1, but in GWX 3, it will not let me, is there any way to fix this?
I am also using SH3 Commander v3.2.0.203 There were a few IX's out at sea on 19 August, 1939. Any help is setting this up would be greatful.

Yep, of the fourteen boats sent on patrol August 19, 1939 to await the start of hostilities four of them were Type VIIa from the Flotilla Saltzwedel (2nd) based at Wilhelmshaven, five of them were Type IX (they were technically not called 'IXa') from the Flotilla Hundius (also incorporated into the 2nd) and the remaining five were Type VIIb based with the Flotilla Wegener (7th) at Kiel.
I too would love to start one career in a IX right at the beginning of the war.

Even when unchecking the historical U-boat availability dates in SH3 Commander your unable to get a Type IX in the 2nd Flotilla until Dec 39.
Here's a quick workaround: Go into the Data\Cfg file, open up the Basic file, scroll down to the area below and change the value 12 to 8 (in yellow bold for illustration purposes). [SUBMARINE2] NrMinOff=3 NrMaxOff=5 NrMinPO=10 NrMaxPO=19 NrMinSeamen=24 NrMaxSeamen=32 NbVersion=4; 5 Version0=0 ; IXB Name0=IXB Month0=12 >8 Year0=1939 Version1=1 ; IXC Name1=IXC Month1=7 Year1=1941 Version2=2 ; IXC/40 Name2=IXC/40 Month2=10 Year2=1942 Version3=3 ; IXD2 Name3=IXD2 Month3=1 Year3=1943 ;Version3=3 ; IXD1 ;Name3=IXD1 ;Month3=10 ;Year3=1941 ;Version4=4 ; IXD2 ;Name4=IXD2 ;Month4=1 ;Year4=1943 DaysSpentInBase=28 Save the changes then boot up the game starting a new career commencing August 39 in 2nd flotilla. Sail around the harbour in your Type VII for a few hours then save the game. Go to your SH3 folder in C\MyDocs and go to the career save and change the Delta Renown (I changed mine to 50000.00. Save the changes then boot up the game, go to the upgrade screen (see below) and purchase a Type IX for 9000 renown (leaving you with a healthy 41000). There is another method of making the Type IX available but that entails opening up a lot more files and running the risk of your installation becoming FUBAR. ![]() |

Jim is correct, of course. This work around is far better than others.
As for renown, I like to use it to assess my progress in the game so I don't like to increase the delta renown. Instead I change the basic config file to eliminate the need for renown to obtain all improvements and any other requirements by setting to zero all renown=x in the file. When I choose an improvement to my sub, I stay in base for three months to install it. This is close to the way the NYGM handles the update issue. I don't change the available dates, however. The only change I make in the delta renown file is to give myself the value of the navel academy renown, as I don't repeat this with new installs or new careers.

Sorry but should have mentioned 'not possible if using SH3 Commander' because you will then be going into the alternative method which involves Flotilla CFG files.
It will work in game mode only as per date and sub type in image posted above. |

Were the instructions that simple? Are you supposed to write '12 >8' or are you supposed to change the month from 12 to 8?
[edit] I just went into SH3 Commander's Cfg/U-boat availability folder and changed [SUBMARINE2] 903_NbVersion=4; 5 903_Version0=0 ; IXB 903_Name0=IXB 903_Month0=8 903_Year0=1939 903_Version1=1 ; IXC 903_Name1=IXC 903_Month1=1 903_Year1=1941 903_Version2=2 ; IXC/40 903_Name2=IXC/40 903_Month2=7 903_Year2=1942 903_Version3=3 ; IXD2 903_Name3=IXD2 903_Month3=6 903_Year3=1945 903_DaysSpentInBase=75 The IXB now shows up in the Flotilla Saltzwedel list for August! I don't know if I can actually get it, because I haven't tested it yet and I haven't changed it in GWX. Test coming up.

The way upgrades worked in the second would war was to install them when available on the subs (and other ships) which were available.
The stated method is what happened. See the readme for NYGM mod for the discussion.
