The pioneering Brits who are heralding the dawn,
of the new Zeppelin age.
When the Hindenburg blew up in 1937, so did the airship industry. So why is Britain building a fleet of the world's biggest, for the Americans, in our old Zeppelin sheds? ![]() A Hybrid Air Vehicles prototype; the first ships are due to be completed in 2012 2015: Regent’s Park International Airport A line of limousines and taxis snakes its way into the Royal Park to deliver 300 well-heeled passengers and their smart luggage to the discreet air terminal. They are in no rush because the flight they are about to board to New York will take two days. Moored on the grass outside the terminal is a 600ft long behemoth, a vast Hybrid Air Vehicle. A cross between a balloon and an aircraft wing, this new-wave blimp is filled with non-flammable helium and air. Slung beneath is a vast passenger cabin akin to a miniature first-class cruise ship with dining rooms, a ballroom, bars and a casino. For the same price as a club-class plane ticket, these 300 discerning travellers will eat, sip cocktails and dance as they float serenely across the Atlantic. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/home/mosl...pelin-age.html Note: Last updated at 2:06 AM on 21st February 2011

I hope this actually becomes a reality. Damn, I'll newer take a plane if they fill Europe's skies with these beauties.

![]() I think they do look like some sexy ships, but I am very sceptic that this enterprise will be a success. The Germans tried it 10 years ago with the Cargolifter, a ship that should be used mainly for the transport of freight (who would have guessed by the name?) They filed for bankrupcy 2,3 years after their foundation and their construction plans were bought by the Zeppelin company. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CargoLifter We still have Zeppelin manufacture airships, but they sold the huge amount of 4 zeppelins in the past 14 years... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zeppelin_NT The main reasons why the Cargolifter project failed, are still existent today: the ships are extremly vunurable to weather conditions, the payload is small and the speed is relative slow. The only thing that changed over the past years is a skyrocketing of energy/raw material prices, so that would be the only niche were I would see a use for them: the exploration of inaccessible areas in the search for raw materials. I love those big-ass airships however and would love them to have a renaissance, so good luck for the next effort to bring them back! |

I Love Zeppelins. Always did. I sincerely hope to see them up in the skies again in their old sizes and glory once again. I would give my left arm to have seen the Hindenburg in the air and considered it a great shame the Cargolifter concept never really made it.
Thumbs up, Tommies, sincerely hope you get those things up and running again and maybe jump start a world wide trend! =)

She ship was gloriously rendered, though, so I will wait for a version cutting all the Zep scenes together without the rest. Do you know the documentary of the diary of Lady Grace Drummond-Hay? Ran on Arte and Phoenix a bit ago. Great material to imagine how it must have been on board. Chances are low we'll ever see such grace again in the air as the Hindenburg resembled, but anyways, the concept alone is so incredible inspiring, I seriously hope we will see those giants back in the air some day.
