Default So who just made 2nd degree black belt?

OH THAT'S RIGHT I DID.

Am home after celebratory dinner, did my presentation for sensei and a couple invited onlookers (family, friend and fellow student) and was duly promoted to the rank of Nidan (= 2nd Dan).

I was allowed to put together my own presentation so I chose one sword kata and two other (unarmed) kata, all stuff that I either learned or fine-tuned while working towards this promotion. But a couple weeks ago it occurred to me that, technically speaking, none of these kata are 2nd Black material, they're just things my sensei decided to work on with me over the past couple of years. So I started playing around with some of the actual techniques that are required at this level, and ended up stringing them together in one long presentation.

I previewed it for my sensei a couple days ago when I was finishing up my last pre-promotion session and he was pretty knocked out.

"You made up your own kata? You made up your own kata."

"Well, yeah, I guess so, but the transitions still need some work..."

"Get out of here, go home, I have nothing to add, you're ready. You have seen the big picture. YOU MADE UP YOUR OWN KATA."

Turned out I was the first student he'd ever had who made up a kata all on their own just cuz they felt like it. I did some more fine-tuning on it and I have to say, it turned out pretty good. So, yeah, I'm awesome.

Well you could search for "Tracy's Karate" videos of the three established ones I did, I'm sure they're out there somewhere. Although I won't vouch for anyone else's performance of them, a lot depends on who you learn it from. It's one way that those in the know can tell you who studied with, every instructor tends to put his/her own little tweaks on things and pass it on. But the ones I did were:
  • #1 Sword
  • Little Tiger
  • the Book Set aka the Panther Set. Although I did the complete version, I don't know how frequently that's taught. I learned the shorter version first and only learned the "missing section" recently.
There is no video of the one I made up, cuz it didn't exist until about six days ago.

When I used to walk a lot around the neighborhood for exercise I had a small canister of pepper spray on a keyring... but the closest I ever came to using it was on some dog that was running around the lot next to where I live. The owners were within eyesight but didn't have it on a leash. They kept saying "oh he's friendly" but he was growling and charging me, getting closer every time. I'm supposed to take their word for it? I don't think so. I love animals but I'm not getting bit by some strange dog because its owners can't be bothered to obey the law. I told them I had pepper spray and would use it if they didn't get their pet under control and they just laughed.

It was a katana kata that I did, actually. I have a wooden practice one (bokken) that I use. I keep it handy at home, it's my version of the baseball bat that some people keep under their beds.
