Default Mods for Gamersgate version

I've been reading a bit on the various mods available for the game and the mod lists that are stable etc, which state a registered TDW Generic Patcher is required to use those lists, yet I also read these do not work with the steam exe due to that exe having self extracting code or something that wrecks it.

I am downloading the Gamersgate version of the game which I am hoping is able to be modded, if not, which digital download of the game should I buy?

If so, happy days and here I go sinking my life in to another silent hunter career

My last game played was Silent Hunter III, I skipped 4 as playing as a US captain didn't appeal to me at the time, I always viewed the submarine WW2 sim as the classic German perspective game.

Anyway, I am looking forward to getting in to it again. I recall with SH3 I used to manually target ships by plotting their course over several observations and then plotting an intercept point down their path, drawing a right angle to their path to work out a firing solution, I'm a bit rusty from a few years break, but does this method still work for targeting in SH5? I enjoyed it as it felt more realistic having to work something out and plan the attack vs just having the computer plot it for me.

Plus, attacking a target in torrential rain was near impossible. I believe there is a mod to make the UI more SH3 style, which I am hoping would allow the above attacking technique to work if it does not with vanilla SH5 UI.

Thanks for any advice and I hope to get this up and running smoothly and be on my way.

I was thinking of starting out with the list from the site below, the list that states for good immersion.

Is this still an accurate list to use today?

Thanks for the help.

Go for "The Wolves of Steel 1.03" megamod because it's a balanced and stable mod, and is the easiest to install. Also vdr1981 works tirelessly supporting and updating his megamod.

Sobers megamod is also very good if you like installing and tweaking your mod setup.

Check out these links and see what you think.

Thanks Kevinsue.

I have to say I'm not off to a good start.

Downloaded the game from GamersGate and installed. All fine, tried to run the game and it downloaded all the patches etc. But when running the game, the launcher updates and then just disappears with no game starting.

Tried a few things and decided maybe I should just uninstall and re-install again from the downloaded game files, no dice, hitting the auto run and then install just makes the autorun menu disappear also. Fantastic.

I haven't even started the game and am running in to issues.

Re-downloading the install files again now, if this does not work I think I'll just get SH4 and give that a whirl.

I managed to get it working, I ended up uninstalling it, redownloading the game again and installing it. This time it did some stuff it didn't do before, like actually leave a start menu folder and shortcut etc.

Anyway, this one worked.

I have to say coming from SHIII to V is a strange step, I'm used to being able to set speed and change direction, heading etc from that attack map but this game has messed this up royal. I'm working around it though.

I couldn't get the auto aim thing to work, my torps were heading all over the shop except where I wanted them to, so I ditched it and went back to manual aiming and scored a few hits.

Granted I've only completed the one patrol, but I don't see a great change between III and V other than UI changes.

My conning tower bridge crew must be afraid to be up there by themselves, If I am up there I can't order the boat to dive, and when I come down the ladder they refuse to stay up there, it's like they don't trust me and think I'll dive with em still on lookout, just close the hatch and let em swim home. 1/4 ration of sausages for them.
