Default What's up with the armed trawler?

What's up with the armed trawler? I mean, aren't they a bit over-modeled? If my deck guns were that effective, I'd have no need for torpedoes, I'd just run around day & night wreaking havoc on all passers-by!!
They squirm around so much that wasting 4 or 5 torps is common. My deck guns are probably only 1/4 the strength of theirs! Is my only option to run like a scared rabbit??

Default TMO

ducimus armed his merchants in TMO 2, and possibly also in 1.9. Don't get too close on the surface.

I'm not running TMO, just RSRDC and OM. Some of the merchants have deck guns but it's the "armed trawlers" that run around like destroyers and seem to be be just as dangerous except for depth charges

Yah, the TMO merchants hurt.

However, they tend to lack the range/accuracy that warships are capable of. So get at long range, reduce your profile by turning into them, and fire away (assuming a forward deck gun mount).

They also seem to be less able to see through fog/rough weather conditions, although I haven't confirmed this. It's just an observation.

One last thing that makes em less of a threat: They don't pursue you.

The ones I'm talking about do! When you click on the map icon or get the description in your TDC, they are called "Armed Trawler". Am I the only one seeing these? I had one show up on the map as I was running on my plotted course, I didn't feel like dancing with him so I just kept going. He actually turned my way, chased me and began firing. I took some damage before I got to periscope depth. They are not like a regular merchant, they actually go out of their way to attack. Nobody else has seen these?

I know what you are talking about. The reason they are so accurate is they like most merchants in TMO are set to "veteran" skill level, so they are accurate esp at close range. You can change this by going to the mission editor and opening the Jap_coastal_Merchants files, find the ones that say trawler and change their skill level.I did this to fishing boats in TMO a long time ago because they were just way too effective with their 20 MM fire.Just find the ones that spawn armed merchants....a few in japanese home islands and a few around Indochina(Vietnam)

What/where is the mission editor?

EDIT: Never mind, I found it but I don't see any way to edit a particular ship type. Thanx anyway

Can you run RSRDC with OM. I thought RSRDC was a mod for RFB and TMO?

Yup you can, it has to be loaded first with JSGME then OM. I was getting CTD's now & again when I had OMEGU loaded and tried to run the fleet boats. Now I only have RSRDC and OM and a few other minor mods. So far no more CTD's

You can see Lurker's post about it here under "Option 2" about half way down the page... http://www.subsim.com/radioroom/showthread.php?t=134922

The Armed Trawlers will show up around the English coastline, or English channel as well. They aren't specific only to the pacific and they aren'y solely in RSRD because I don't run RSRD with OM and they're still there.

They're mostly coastal patrol craft but they'll also respond if an enemy plane reports your position and you actually stick around long enough.

In TMO the range is much further than that. Much depends on visuals, fog, time of war, crew settings. I know the exact range....way off, you can get blasted by merchants at twice that plus some and a veteran merchant crew can really place some nice long range shots.

Also depends on what gun they're using. Maybe you're thinking machine gun range, which is 3000 yards, gun range...a lot more.
Yes, theres a set range, but they only can shoot what they see, thus you can get closer at night, ect. If they can't spot you, they'll respond like you're not even shooting as you blast away..

Think both TMO and RSRD, RSRD for sure has a small merchant Q-ship, starts with a T, has 4 Y throwers, sonar and a mass of deckguns, machine guns......don't let it fool ya,
