Good pics.
Sadly, vessels can dispose of their crap at sea, but there are regulations on what and where. ![]() Good practice for military vessels is to keep and compact waste for disposal on shore - which the RN claim to do, not sure about anybody else. ![]() Edit: Here is the RN way http://www.royalnavy.mod.uk/training...on-board-ship/

There was a time not too long ago where the Russian Military dumped far worse things at sea.
![]() That's a Project 1783A Vala class YRR ("Radiological Repair Barge") its mission was to store liquid nuclear waste and dump it at sea after she filled up her tanks. International pressure in the early 1990s put an end to that. Now the ships just sit there filled with nuclear waste. Funny Greenpeace protests our navy for having potential nuclear disasters while they don't seem to bother much with the Russians and their actual nuclear disasters... ![]() |

http://archive.greenpeace.org/odumpi...s/history.html http://www1.american.edu/ted/arctic.htm Greenpeace has been protesting ocean dumping of nuclear waste by the Russians since the 1970's. Just because the American press only reports greenpeace stuff that affects America or our friends, does not mean that greenpeace is not protesting other countries

Like it was said already it is normal to dump your trash at sea. I don't know how the Russians do it but if the picture is any indication it's no wonder we could track them anywhere.

Was this a special tube only used for trash or was it also used for something else?

Trash only. It was a vertical tube that came out the bottom of the boat.

Don't they compress the trash down into a flat disk?

Trash is separated into two categories, wet and dry. Dry trash gets compacted with a trash compactor. Wet trash does not get compacted as the end result is extremely messy. Wet trash is using plate scrapings from the last meal and doesn't do to well under 3000lbs hydraulics.

Look at the cute bears!!
(Awesome, it appears that not only are the Russians but also the general public is not aware of the CIA's Secret Polar Bear Arctic Infiltration Suit. The collection of information on the subs continues...)
