However, running through the Gibraltar at full speed while screaming FASTER FASTER with tons of shells flying above you, is the definition of bravery.

I didnt think it was possible to SMASH into the bottom of the ocean floor, 280 metres, and then repair the ship, resurface and make it to Laz Spezia.
Anything is possible with a little movie magic!!!!

Its a movie. Just enjoy it.

As submarine movies go it has the least 'hollywood' of them all.

One of the few films where you can fart and pick your nose and blame it on the film.

The book is fiction based on what the author has experienced as a war reporter on board of the U 96.

I have read somewhere that during the patrol of U 96 that Buchheim had joined they did not sink any ships, it was an uneventful patrol, except that one day they actually went down to the bottom by accident, but at a depth of 60 - 90 meters, something like that, and had to work their way up again.

Also, there were no longer rivets in WW II German u-boats, that was WW I.
So no exploding rivets, the director said they used that as a dramatic effect for more suspense well knowing that it lacks historical accuracy.

Read the book "Das Boot", it is even better.

It is a very good movie. I own the directors cut, and the orginal But it ultimatly is a movie, about a novel. I remember some surviving uboat captain (Eric topp? or was it Reinhard Hardigan?) said that the movie was accurate in its portrayal of boredom and life on a uboat, but to toss the rest as rubbish, or words to that effect.

LOL

Not a bad film...as films go...and far better than some of the Hollywood efforts.

Historical no....

... prophetic yes...

MHD drives exist but it wasn't until several years after the film they discovered they were not as efficient compared to conventional drives.

They thought the pod on the Victor was a MHD at one point until better images were taken.
