Default Death Screen

It wouldn't take much but a "death" screen showing how you were killed and/or a letter to your next of kin. It could even be a letter from the red cross to say you are a POW.

An image or two would do it, maybe even a small video to show your doom from the enemies perspective.

They need an order to abandon ship for this game in case you take too much damage, in which case a cutscene plays showing you either being rescued (and being taken a POW, depending on who does the rescuing) or lost adrift at sea. Maybe show the crew launching the liferafts and putting lifejackets on before actually abandoning. Maybe give YOU the choice to go down with your ship, while the crew abandons. Far-fetched, but a man can dream.

I think as your boat floods, however, water should be shown filling up the interior, with stuff bobbing around and such. I mean that in a critical way- as in it's GOT to make it into the final product. The cutscenes and such I can do without, though.

Default Lost at sea

How 'bout an end-game where you and the surviving crew try to avoid capture by rowing like hell in your life-raft?

I was always impressed with the way IL2 handled the so called "death screen". If you sustained a direct hit, the screen went black. Plain and simple! Game over! This seemingly plain and undramatic effect gave me goosebumps because of the realistic suddeness of death.

As for the subs, I'm no expert, but I would have to think that the implosion of a pressure hull is quite sudden, and death quick as tons of pressure crush you like a tin can. Probrably the last thing you'd hear is the horrible sounds of your hull crushing under astronomical water pressure before your lights went out a second later!

European Air War was pretty horrible, in the Death Screen department. If you were hit you could of course bail out. If you were killed in the cockpit you suddenly had a view from outside, and watched your plane spiral down. The horrible part? Until the range became too great you could see the blood smearing the canopy.

I don't know if I want to see the inside of the sub as the bulkheads burst and the water comes rushing in, but that would indeed heighten the feel at the end of the game. I do definitely want to see the report of my death, or failure to return, and I want to know how I died if it happened suddenly.

Also, in the case of an ill-advised surface action, I wouldn't cry if I got a message that I was killed and my 1WO brought the boat home safely, or that I was killed but some of my crew survived to be captured.

The only think I absolutely demand is that I, as player, know what happened.

well since you are under water most of the time it would be rare to even have the chance to abandon ship.

but they do have unused abandon ship speech files in sh4 so they thought about it

How about a small animation from a first person perspective showing (the captain) eyes and mouth wide open, body bobbing inside the sunken boat with a couple of small fishes nibbling at the beard.

The scene should then change to a letter sent to surviving relatives informing them of your demise in the line of duty , together with any commendation/medal awarded. SH1 style

An option giving the crew a chance to abandon ship at a reasonable depth (depths ranging from surface to periscope depth) should be seriously considered.

There where many cases of sub crews abandoning ship. Some even managed to escape their sunken subs after they went under.

The GWX mod had an option of information of your fate. Made it a better game without much effort.

Haha, like the game over screen Angry Video Game Nerd came up with to Friday the 13th:

You're dead.
Your friends are dead.
Your family's dead.
Your *********g pets are being skinned alive.
Your mom's a *********g w***e.
You suck at life.
The whole world hates you.
You're going to hell.
Live with it.
Game Over.

I don't. If I don't see what hit me, I don't want to know. Maintains that level of uncertainty that existed in real life. Rather a "what the &%^$ was that?" than a "oh sh!t, another mine; better watch out for this spot next time" for me.

With what I've seen of the first person perspective so far, it would seem odd if SH5 didn't model some sort of visual; the final crushing just before the screen goes black, or sudden rush of water through the compartment.

Actually, I'd take this one step further and suggest that the option should be available at any depth, like it was in real life.

The decision would then sit with the Kaleun to consider whether, at any depth, he risks the likelihood of instant flooding if he decides to open the hatch while not on the surface (or even if he can due to water pressure).
