Default Couple Generic Questions ???

Hi All...

Well I am underway on my first real campaign - and I have a few questions... I am running the latest RFB and RSRD mods... I am starting early in Dec of 1941 with an S class boat...

1) With the damage models in use by SH4 - does the presence of fire on a target continue to damage the target ship - or is it strictly a visual ???

2) Is there a way to ZERO out the torpedo heading once you have tracked a target ??? For example - after I get a couple shots in on a merchant - I might do a surface run at short range to finish her off... I want the weapon to run straight off the bow of my boat with a ZERO angle... My TDC still had about a 25 degree to port angle in it... I couldn't figure out how to get it to shoot straight off the bow again.. I made 180 AOB and 0 Speed solution - still had the 25 degree to port...

3) On my S-Class boat - with the free view camera - I noticed my starboard screw wasn't turning... I was at a flank bell on the surface and could only make 10 knots... I checked my Sub Management screen - nothing was damaged... After running TC for a day or so - I had them both again... No messages on any repairs or anything... Ideas ???

Just a visual, sadly.

Reset the TDC values. Crank speed to 0, click. AOB, whatever, click, then point at 0 angle, and send a bearing.

Your batteries were charging I believe (never watched the screws, lol).

Thanks tater...

Hmm - I may have a "GCE" or Gross Conceptual Error here - as my old NAV liked to say...

How do I send a bearing from the scope ???
When shooting at targets - I only use the "Lock" function from the periscope to "mark a bearing"... Is there another way to do it ???

A ship on fire is usually a good indicator that it is in dire trouble and most likely is going to sink.

I have yet to see a ship 'put out the fires' and continue on its way.

So while the fire is cosmetic it is still a good indicatorr.

Make sure you turn the Postion Keeper off. Input a speed of zero into the TDC and click twice. Set your scope to zero degrees and hit the button for the stadmeter, then input (click the little red triangle) twice. This should set your firing solution to fire straight out of the tubes. Don't ask me why you need to click twice, nobody seems to know, but it is neccessary. I am also assuming you are using manual targeting. Otherwise, ........

I have witnessed DD's do this and proceed on.

For sending bearing to the TDC that depends on whether you are autotargeting or manual targeting. With autotargeting, you just point the scope. With manual targeting you set speed to zero or AoB to zero or one-eighty. You don't have to do both, but you can if you want. Point the periscope at the bearing you want to shoot on and press send range/bearing on the right hand TDC input dial.

All representations of damage, including visible holes, fire and deck destruction are just eyecandy and may not represent the real damage being used by the game engine. You've seen screenies of the submarine operating just fine at periscope depth with a big hole in the control room?:rotfl:Well, ships sink with no visible holes in them too. What you see is not what you get.

Yea but then Ive seen DD's sail on at 12 knots with both of her screws out of the water

Stuff happens.

But as a general rule of thumb if a ship is aflame it is in deep doo doo.

Hey - thanks for all the useful information and I only use manual targeting... I like realistic... I think I figured it out...

I've only sunk about (4) ships "total" so far - but - I am learning... Caught a "large" unescorted freighter last night... Used the Vector Attack outlined somewhere in this forum - my longest hit to date... Just over 4000 yards... Who needs a TDC anyway - just a good stop watch and the three minute rule... Best shot I have been able to make with the TDC is under 2000 yards...

Merchant took two in the rear... I surfaced - put a third one in the rear and about 35 shells up the one side at the waterline... Darn thing had its deck's awash but didn't sink... I guess that's the RFB mod...

Anyways - appreciate the help...

Fair wind and following sea's - eh ???

Not in stock. In the stock campaign there is zero traffic in the Marshalls.

I put a fish in this DD and set it aflame and thought for sure I had sunk it. Dived and waited......and waited.......and waited. Kept popping up the scope waiting for it to sink. After a while, I saw the flames slowly extinguish, then just some smoke, then no smoke and it sailed away.
