Default Is this cheating?

At or near enemy harbour either decks awash or P depth scoping out targets in harbour. Set torps (steam) to slow max range for stationary targets and let fly. Usually get a troop transport, Large tanker and a large merchant in broad daylight. Since targets are stationary even when the 1st target is hit they still do not move and there are no nets to stop my eels. Kinda like fish in a barrel here and there are some tugs and DD's that do a sweep but at 12.5 K away they are chasing ghosts. I end up with fat tonnage and only need to go outside of rendering range to reload new targets until I run out of eels.

1) Was this done by U-boat Kaluens at all?

2) Is this a game mechanic and thus too easy or is this the way it should be?

I used to do I at the start of every patrol but I only got about 3 ships a time so now I just go convoy hunting.

Yeah, the Scapa incident was really heavy! Imagine his "lords" reloading the tubes while floating in Scapa!

Harbour raids are easy sometimes, mostly with civil Harbours. Of cause you also may encounter one where the patrols are tuff and if you ask me, I always fear ramming more than Dc's in shallow waters!

Press you luck enough, and it will backlash!

i must admit it... port raiding is rediculously easy in GWX at times. i think that after the scapa flow incident it should be almost impossible to infiltrate a harbor.

need way more mines and nets

I do it, on occassion. Way I see it is if the habour defences are poor, then it's fair game. Cape Town is a good place to raid: there's a back door you can slip out of, and there's usually a few cargo ships at anchor outside of the habour, which you can take out as you make good your escape

cheers
Paul

I never do it. Prien's raid at Scapa Flow was the only German harbor raid that I'm aware of, and it was planned by Admiral Doenitz himself. The Allies made it way too hot after that. Even when it's easy in the game I pretend that it's not.

Harbor raiding was not done for several real rasons.
Listening devices in the Harbors.
Once a sound was detected?
A shore operator set off Mines in that area.

Magnetic grids.
Cross those and Mines went off.

Opening and closeing nets.

No Mod has anything like the real stuff.

Or does it?

Would you hit an old lady in a wheelchair and steal her purse? Leave those poor harbour ships alone.

Using Sh3Gen your often sent to enemy ports. I was nearing "Firth of Forth" when there where explosions coming from the harbour. At first I thought air-raid, but it was too early in the war, Norway was still unoccupied, so there where no axis planes in range. I managed to take some snaps, the explosions were caused by ships appearing in the buildings, note the ship on left stuck halfway in the harbour.

You see gentlemen, there is a new sub-forum at the GWX Lair entitled, "The Hanomag Tonnage Prevention Program."

The 'THTPP" is a rather busy place.

GASP!

Last harbor raid I did was NYC, it was such a PITA. I lagged all the way back to Germany. Not to mention the tonnage blew ass. You would think "Brooklyn" = BB of that class...NOT!

I know some folks who play SH3 make a living off harbor raids... ptooey..

I think you could count on one hand the amount of times I have been to Scapa. I am quite content to prey upon singles or lightly guarded convoys.

Remember I am the guy who hasnt made it passed 1944 yet.

That being said... I now feel the horrific shame as the one responsible for the birth of the new GWX 3.0 super schooner... the 67 ton merchant!

ohh agony ...agony...

I can already see large convoys made of Tugboats, escorted by Elcoes. :rotfl:
