Default U-505 Single Mission

OK, has anyone beaten this yet? I've tried it in plain vanilla stock SHIII, and in GWX, and I always get killed. Right now I'm sitting at 250 meters waiting to get hammered.

Which kind of brings up an interesting point: Were Lange and his crew negligent in letting the TF get that close in the first place? I mean, several destroyers and a jeep carrier make a bit of noise. I'd think that upon hearing them, you'd want to take a look through the scope. Or, if you are closing for a shot, that you'd be a bit more cautious.

From the accounts that I have read, though, it seems as if the crew were surprised and didn't know the TF was in the area. That sounds like someone was asleep at the wheel.

Update: I just got killed again.

I don't. The stated goal of the mission is to sink the Guadalcanal. My mission is solely to survive.

I've tried a couple of different strategies, but none seem to work.

I've tried creeping around near PD at silent running. No dice, they nail you quickly with active sonar, even if you try to show them a minimum profile (which is hard, because submerged the Type IXC has the manuevering capability of a supertanker being propelled by oars.

I've tried an immediate crash dive down to depths that I would never take a career boat (like 240 meters), followed by course changes, and silent running (not necessarily in that order).

Just about the only thing I haven't tried recently is to actually try and take out the escorts. It's folly, though, because by the time you enter the data (a mere 'guess' though) in the TDC, they've already found you and are starting an attack run.

Probably the best you can hope for is to get a lucky shot at the CVE and to keep from being destroyed before it sinks.

I'll keep trying, though...

I managed to finish this mission in a XXI. Fired two homer torps on the DD's. 4 torps long distance shot at the carrier, first homer torp missed, d'oh. Second one sent the DD exloring the bottom of the atlantic.

Dived to 260m, DD lost contact with me a few hairy minutes later 3 of 4 of the long range shots hit home....

Mission finished.

i managed to survive one time but it was not easy, and my boat was damaged .

stay down and use the hidrophone for evasive maneuvers, you can ear the noise of the DD engines when is very near and is possible run at flank to avoid the charges and return to 2 knts.

You aren't supposed to do it surfaced, using your deck gun

Seriously, good job. I still haven't been able to do it at 95% realism.
