Now that the 1.3 patch is out I have decided to get back into SHIV and give it a whirl. I have installed TM 1.3 and I am currently playing an early campaign. My first two missions included patrols and like many of you, I was confused on just what radius around the patrol point I needed to patrol. A search here on the forum suggested 100nm radius, someone said 55nm just to be sure....all maintained for 48hrs.
Well two of my patrols took me to East China Sea and West China Sea. I mapped out 100nm and patrolled within. I wanted to stay in deep waters in the E China Sea patrol which was within the 100nm radius, but i didn't trigger the 48 hour completion. Moved right over the patrol point and stayed 48 hrs and voila mission completed. Ditto with the W. China Sea Patrol. To see what was going on, I poked around in the mission files in the Campaign\Patrol Objectives folder to see what was going on. Whelp, what I found is that there are different radii for different patrol areas, and in the case of East China Sea there are at least two different radii that you need to patrol within. Thing is, when you are assigned the patrol, you have no clue to which radius you need to patrol in! Here are what the values are in the mission files: Honshu 01-08 -- 100km (54 nm) for 48 hours Iwo Jima 01 -- 150km (81nm) for 48 hours Iwo Jima 02 -- 100km (54 nm) for 48 hours Java Sea 01-05 -- 100km (54 nm) for 48 hours Korea Strait 01-02 -- 100km (54 nm) for 48 hours Luzon Strait 01-05 -- 100km (54 nm) for 48 hours Makasar Strait 01-03 -- 100km (54 nm) for 48 hours Mariana Strait 01-03 -- 100km (54 nm) for 48 hours Marshall Islands 01 -- 200km (108nm) for 48 hours Marshall Islands 02 -- 250km (140nm) for 48 hours Molucca Sea 01-02 -- 100km (54 nm) for 48 hours Sea of Japan 01-04 -- 100km (54 nm) for 48 hours Solomon Islands 01 -- 100km (54 nm) for 48 hours South China Sea 01,05 -- 200km (104nm) for 48 hours South China Sea 02-04,06,07 -- 150km (81nm) for 48 hours Sulu Sea 01-02 -- 75km (40nm) for 48 hours Sulu Sea 03-05 -- 100km (54 nm) for 48 hours Yellow Sea 01 -- 200km (108nm) for 48 hours Yellow Sea 02 -- 100km (54 nm) for 48 hours I am pretty sure that the number in the Radius = line is in km. One of my patrols that had a 150 value, I sat at around 90nm for 48 hours and it didnt complete, but once I moved within 80nm and stayed 48 hours it triggered. Also a "deploy" mission that had a value of 200, once I moved to ~100nm it triggered the "sink merchants" mission. I think I am going to work on a fix for this in the campaign this week....at least to let the skipper know just how far they can patrol! ...because this is an easy "fix." The *.tsr files for the campaign missions contain the information that pops up on the screen and is inserted in the captain's log. Editing the MissionBriefing= line to something along the lines of: "Patrol Yellow Sea within 54nm (100km) of Long WWW° XX' E, Lat YY° ZZ' for at least 48 hours and engage enemy shipping" That information should pop up when assigned the patrol, and it should be entered in the captain's log for later reference. |

250klm radius is good . Thats about the radius of the Bismark Sea . Maybe make all the patrolls 250klm radius . What do you think .

Maybe larger radius, but longer time...

Yeah, when reading those patrol reports, they stayed a lot longer there.
Maybe 4 - 10 days. I don't see all the implications yet, but somewhere in that magnitude, any thoughts?

Yeah, it would be nice if you'd go to near the patrol area, and patrol around instead of parking on a spot for 2 days, then playing normally.

There's another thing.
When looking at the numbers the actual subs brought home (meaning ship tonnage they sank and claimed) vs the demand of the game to sink at least 10.000 ton for a mission complete (not being the patrol objective) I think this should be edited as well. Any thoughts??

Good point, I never looked at the requirement for completion. I'd set the minimum at something like 1700 tons.
I think I'd also eliminate the merchant vs warship requirement, US boats were always on the lookout for warships, using all your fish to sink a BB shouldn't make the patrol fail cause you sank no merchies. tater |

I'm only looking to provide the information to the skipper. I am not planning on changing the actual radius or the tonnage necessary to complete one of those engage missions. I feel that those changes should be made in a realism type of mod.
I havent actually looked at the areas that the patrol locations are, but I assume that with some of them the different radii may be because they didnt want the radius to extend over solid land. I agree that 10K tonnage to complete some of those missions is a bit too much, but I will leave that to others who may have a bit more historical background to decide on what to change it to. |
