When I select the "Multyplay" option, it only allows me to join Local servers, not online ones. What is this?

the in-game join function is only to join for example a Private server like a friend that hosts one, and shares the IP with you

for easier searching , download the program All-seeying Eye.
I guess there are some other programms that allows you to browse a list of public dedicated servers . btw what game are you reffering to?

you need the ip address of the host server before you can play
ie: if i were hosting the game i would give you the ip address to connect to
