any one now which files to delete to remove a save'ed game

You can find the save game files in My Documents\SH4\data\cfg\SaveGames folder. Then simply delete any you no longer need. Another way to delete them is when in-game, go to the save game menu option, and delete any files you no longer want.

I must be blind but I dont see the delete option in the load game section.

You won't see it from there.

You need to be in a mission, then go to the menu as if you were going to enter a new save game. While you're in there, you can highlight existing saves, and delete as necessary.
