Just for fun (and a few tons) I thought I'd venture into Loch Ewe in 1940. I was going in on the surface at night hoping to avoid nets because I couldn't remember where I'd seen a harbour map (doh!). So I spotted an armed trawler and thinking 'pah only a trawler' I rather slowly tried to man the deck gun. Before I could finish, one round from the trawler was fired, hitting the deck gun area and 3 crew were dead!
Was this bad luck, or should I not have got into such a stupid position in the first place? If the latter, some pertinent advice on how to infiltrate would be appreciated! Perhaps a harbour map would help? |

That was pretty bad luck. I tend to get away with engaging Trawlers etc, and winning with the deck gun.
But, get caught out in a Harbour and you're done for - I just got to Halifax and was spotted diving, there were literally 8 DDs pounding me for ~6hours till the flooding exceeded pumping ![]() Found it quite easy to slip into Scapa Flow with a Type IID, weaving between the nets and wrecks (love GWX) and getting out before I got into too much trouble ![]() |

deck gun shmeck gun i use AA on em doesnt take long aim for their guns and command deck. although doing that alerts every ship and his DC in the area.
i dont go into harbours anymore i can just as easily sink more tonnage from convoys

You don't have the iceburg desguise mod?
![]() I've hit Lock Ewe once under heavy rain & fog. More trouble then it was worth.

I only engage enemy warships with guns (deck or flak) as a last act of defiance before dying.
Seriously, isn't taking on destroyers with guns a "gameplay" thing rather than a realistic approach to U-Boat warfare? |

I hit the "Cloaking Device" button, then when they're in range I hit "Tractor Beam" to ensure 90degree AOB, and finally I finish them off with a good 'ol "Photon Torpedo"...works every time!

Hmmm, thanks all. I knew it was foolish but had to give it a go! And against a trawler I thought I'd get away with a bit of bravado. I suppose a torpedo might be more appropriate but it seems a waste for a trawler. Having said that, if there are some nice targets in the Loch it would be worth it...
Forgot to mention this is with GWX 1.02 if anyone is wondering. |
