Default Real U-Boat Controls

So, I'm knocking about my control room - can't live forever on that damn chart table - and I notice a tall level gauge near the controls for the bow and stern planes that seems to indicate the fore/aft angle of the sub. Got me to realizing that I don't know a lot about the actual controls and systems aboard the U-Boat.

Can anyone point me to a good web reference that talks about how U-Boats actually operate - how a real TDC works, etc.

Thanks, and good hunting to you.

A couple of direct link...

For US subs, but the picture's the same...

The current doctrine:
COMMANDER SUBMARINE FORCE, PACIFIC FLEET, FEBRUARY, 1944

A mariners manual:
http://www.maritime.org/fleetsub/

Doesn't get much more authentic than that

The Pampanito sight is so fantastic. The War Patrol Reports are so informative. What really blew my mind was that the US Subs could communicate on the surface during attacks using their UHF Radar. This seems to me to indicate that US Navy Wolfpack attacks were more coordinated than those of their German counterparts.

If you guys ever make it to the beautiful city of San Francisco, you should definitely visit the Pampanito and the Liberty Ship Jeremiah Obrien.
