I watched Gods of the Arena a couple of years ago, it looked quite entertaining and ticked some of the quintessential modern Roman epic boxes:

Bloody violence - Check
Sandals - Check
Fairly accurate infrastructural depiction - Check [Bonus points for featuring the public toilets]
Sex - Check [Bonus points for topless Lucy Lawless]
Roman based swearing - Check
British actor[s] - Check
Politics - Check

What makes it different from other Roman series is the use of '300' style slow motion during the arena fights, which are depicted in accordance with item one of the Roman check-list.

It's no Rome, nor is it I, Claudius, but it's has a fair bout of entertainment value, I quite enjoyed it, and not just for item four of the Roman check-list.

Well looking at that link it certainly appears to be worth a viewing.

Gods of the Arena and Blood and Sand were good, mainly because John Hannah
was still around (and Lucy Lawless' tits). Vengeage was way worse, of course,
there was no John Hannah (nor Lucy Lawless' tits), but the new Spartacus was
just horrible. He had the "oh poor me" puppy face on all the time, just didnt
fit in at all.

John Hannah was very awesome in it, easily the star of the show in my eyes.

After watching the first episode, it feels like the actors got fat?

Come on, I expected these guys to be like conan the barbarian, but they all seem to got fat. especially gannacus, it looks like he got a small beer belly.

Other than that, the scenery is very nice, story is still highly excellent. but the action has lost a bit of focus.
