Default Where are the candidates

Where are these people, so called leaders, on this subject ( the VT shootings). Has anyone heard from them? Both major parties are lacking leadership. What poll are they waiting for?

From my point of view they are not leaders. They are cynical followers. What ever it takes to get elected. That is what they are about. I dislike them emensely. POS all.

What say all of you?

I say you ought to mention what subject you're talking about.

The VT shootings. Apologies, I wasn't specific.

I believe McCain has made a statement as well as President Bush who attended the memorial service. What kind of statement are you looking for? I'm assuming it isn't the usual "shock and sorrow" one.

I hadn't seen any statement from any candidate. If you can point me toward McCains statement on the subject I'd be much obliged.

Thanx

I could, though, turn around and say that maybe it's better to say nothing at all than to use a tragedy to flex your electoral muscle. I'd consider it bad taste.

I'm sure all of them had, in some way, said something along the lines of "shock and grief", and I don't see why it needs to be anything beyond that. And surely the silence doesn't mean they don't care. Perhaps the opposite.

I understand a respectful amount of time between the incident and moving on CCIP. Look at the debate in this forum. The debate has been no less heated on other forums. I would consider a candidate making a statement regarding the issues a sign of leadership. If nothing else this country respects leadership.

Important issues are at stake. We should know where the candidates stand.........without the polls.

Default Response from Fred Thompson

Heya guys, first post here, but I've been lurking for a few years now (since SH3). Just received this link from a friend. It's Fred Thompson's response to the VT incident. Like waste gate, I, too, wondered when the major candidates would come out with their opinions.

http://article.nationalreview.com/?q...U3YTU4YzNmNGE=

And a small bit to whet your appetite:

The statistics are clear. Communities that recognize and grant Second Amendment rights to responsible adults have a significantly lower incidence of violent crime than those that do not. More to the point, incarcerated criminals tell criminologists that they consider local gun laws when they decide what sort of crime they will commit, and where they will do so.
Still, there are a lot of people who are just offended by the notion that people can carry guns around. They view everybody, or at least many of us, as potential murderers prevented only by the lack of a convenient weapon. Virginia Tech administrators overrode Virginia state law and threatened to expel or fire anybody who brings a weapon onto campus.

That's the only thing I've seen so far, but to be honest, I can't stand news outlets and most of my news comes from you guys.

A shock and sympathy statement is on McCains offical website. Similar ones on Clintons and Obamas and i'm sure the rest of them have made them as well. Again Wastegate i'm not sure exactly what you're looking for here. After all most of the victims haven't even been buried yet so it'd be somewhat crass for any candidate to use the incident to advance his campaign at this time dontcha think?

Fred Thompson's great. I'd vote for him in a heartbeat. He doesn't mix words very much.

He said something in an interview to the effect: [ I'd be happy to get back into the backstabbing of politics after dealing with it in Hollywood for so long.]-paraphrasing. :rotfl: Of course, he has a way of putting things far beyond my ability.

I really don't know what you're getting at, waste.

Well, at least someone is getting some mileage out if this

That's actually what I'd label the people who are viewing this incident and debating it through the lense of gun control. This was a random suicidal rampage, gun control has nothing to do with it. Tragic events like this should not be an excuse for both sides to simply squawk louder than before.

For those wondering what I'm getting at; I thought that people vying for a leadership position might like to show some leadership. I guess that would be too much to ask anyone who would be president. I don't know of anyone who isn't sorry about what happened, but its a far cry from being a leader.

Negative.

That's why we're in our current situation. It's always easiest to do nothing, but make a public speech about how you're going to change something. Doesn't annoy the people who fund your campaign.

Plus, if you're a "dead ender" (a politician with no other job prospects), you don't want to lose your job. This is why every Senator hates Tom Coburn. When he rolls out of the Senate this next 1/3 cycle, he's still going to be a licensed OB/GYN -- he's been keeping up his license for the past ~15 years by delivering babies during the congressional off-season. They brought the bastard up on ethics charges several years back because he had a job other than Congress.

It was absolutely ludicrous.

I don't see the point in any of them saying anything. I mean, not unless they want to hijack it as a political tool which would be both obvious and in bad taste.

In these situations I don't give a crap what they think frankly. Though its something that is talked about everywhere its not a national issue so as far as presidential candidates are concerned they don't really have much business barking up a state issue's tree.

Besides, I don't think that there needs to be too many distractions from the already hot federal issues.

Personally I hate it when everyone gets emotional and personal with these tragedies. Most people are about as involved with the VT shootings as I am. Be sympathetic, have the natural human reaction of "oh thats terrible", but don't be self indulgent.
