yes, I know the DW mission editor pretty good, even created some doctrine scripts.
DW is good in simulating the different 'workplaces' like sonar/TMA but it lacks the 'captain view' due to its limited crew AI and the absence of a generic (non-scripted) AI in general.
The strength of RSR is the atmosphere, enemy AI and the dynamic campaign.
In contradiction to the existing indie approaches I would omit a 3D engine completely (at least for the first version) and just focus on the topics to simulate a 'captain's view' in a cold war environment. But that's just my personal view...
