Keeping in formation with the AI in IL2 is pretty difficult as the AI wingmen will constantly change speed to create a "realistic" formation where not everyone is in the exact position all the time (just switch to autopilot and watch your throttle lever). The only AI that's flying at a constant speed is the flight leader. So don't worry if you can't keep formations. Most of the Lolwaffles have been flying for years (I do since 2002) and still can't keep a proper formation.
