Monkeys Defeat Bowl Champ
Gunners Silenced

This is it folks, after the long wait, we're back again and it's Week One in the Subsim Fantasy Football League.

Let's recap some of preseason for those that came in late.

There was no preseason, we started with the draft, and teams had five days.

Got it? Good! Let's get to the football after the most important news you need to hear.

DONATE TO SUBSIM...AND NOMINATE SUBSIM FANTASY FOOTBALL FOR BEST OF SUBSIM.

Last year, the Guns of Hochuli were a regular season mediocrity, up and down in their wins and losses before scrambling into the post season. But, once in the post season, they went the whole way and defeated the two biggest names in the league to win their first Torpedo Bowl. So after the the draft you would expect that dominance to continue, particularly when they are playing at home the Drunk Monkeys, one of the most disappointing teams in the league when they're not present - but dynamic when they show up. Having missed the draft for Covid19, Coach Thad was no where to be seen for the Monkeys but the players didn't seem to mind - as they set about just thumping the Gunners.

With starting quarterback Kyle Murray, the Monkeys looked like they might have the red rump to sustain the Gunners blasting. It was in the Monkeys wide receiving corp that that Monkeys showed their true dominance, outscoring the Gunners 80 points to36. Coach Casey of the Gunners may have misread the players list at the draft and thought he was getting Antonio Brown (WR) but instead drafted AJ Brown (WR) who was the disappointment of the game. The Monkeys open the regular season with the leagues highest score of the week just annihilating the Gunners 183 - 136. With the Monkeys having the first week one win in seven years, could this be the year that the Drunk Monkeys come through - should their Coach show up?

The Subsim Match of the Game in Oregon was the heavyweight clash we've come to expect from easily, the two best Coaches on the league. Coach Fuel for Blood of the Who Dat Nation Rises was hosting Mister Chris of the Helmand Nighthawks in a week one divisional match. These two team are going to to go back and forth all year in the run to win the divisional and the #1 seed, with the other to take one of the wildcard positions. Returning as the oldest starting QB in the league, Drew Brees (QB) did not have a stand out game for the Nation on a first appearance, but did enough to keep the Nation in the hunt. Thee Nighthawks however, took Lamar Jackson (QB) as the first quarterback in the draft and this paid dividends in excess of 30 points. Both teams receiving corps were held in check to lower than expected scores, with the Nighthawks Josh Jacobs (TE) being instrumental in giving the Nighthawks the win. In a an expected slug fest, the Nighthawks and the Who Dat Nation went back and forth until the final whistle. In the end, the performance of the Nighthawks was just better than the Nation, resulting in a 155 - 130 win for Mister Chris and the Nighthawks.

Well, we didn't have to wait very long for the first thriller of the year, with the Black Cats hosting the Australian Taipans. The Taipans ran onto the field Thursday night but were finished by Sunday afternoon. The Black Cats stayed close and despite starting underdogs, this was looking to be a exciting season home opener for the Cats. And then Chris Riddley (WR) of the Taipans showed up with two touchdowns and 130 yards. The Black Cats had drafted Derrick Henry (RB) with the first draft choice and expected yardage and a score from him. Henry (RB) ran the ball for 116 yards and with just two (2) seconds left in the game, needed two (2) more yards to give the Black Cats the win. It was not to be and in the closest scoring game of the week, the Taipans managed to squeak out a win against an unexpected high performance Black Cats 169.04 - 167.12.

So after Week One - where do we stand?

Half the league is 0-1, the other half is 1-0.

Of note, all the visiting teams won on opening day, the first time that this has happened in the league. Wow.

With Covid19 restricting player movements to the continental area, the Helmand Nighthawks get to play their first game in their assigned stadium next week when the Black Cats travel to Saint Loius. This game represents two coaches who have multiple Torpedo Bowl appearances, with Mister Chris being the most acclaimed coach with more wins.

Also, next week, this column will be coming to you later than usual. I will be on the road next Sunday at Sofi Stadium for the Chargers game, then driving to the "Death Star" for Monday Night with the Las Vegas Raiders, as part of the press Corp.

Each week, the Associated Subsim Writers (ASW) will nominated their Most Valuable Torpedo (MVT) of the week, the single player who proved decisive in their teams performance.

For For the effort of 16 yards for 1 rushing touchdown, and 5 receptions for 51 yards and a receiving touchdown, for a total score of 23.70, the opening week MVT goes to Alvin Kamara (RB) of the Drunk Monkeys.
