Stock Silent Hunter 4 is really bad.
I can't really disagree.

This is what I recommend:

RFB_2.0 .....................................(Real Fleet Boat)
RFB_2.0_Patch_23April2010
RSRDC_RFB_V575 ......................(Run Silent Run Deep Campaign)
RSRDC_RFBV5xx_Patch1
Improved Ship Physics 1.1

This provides many improvements with only five mods. RFB (Real Fleet Boat) aims to achieve the most realistic gameplay and changes many elements. RSRDC (Run Silent Run Deep Campaign) changes shipping traffic and missions to historical volume/pattern. Stock has excessive traffic and isn't well configured.

ISP makes the diving, turning, acceleration, battery performance, and sea-keeping of your boat more realistic.

Note that you must have v1.5 of Silent Hunter 4 to run these mods (as most others).

Many prefer TMO, but be aware that it is significantly harder in terms of the enemy escorts. If you view the game as mainly a battle against enemy destroyers, you might want that. RFB escorts have a historical level of capability, no more. They get better as the war progresses, but start at a pretty low level.

...only two out of 4 torpedoes actually hit anything even with auto targeting ...
Auto targeting isn't necessarily the most effective option. In fact, I would say a skilled, experienced player can outperform the auto-targeting AI. The reason for this is that while the auto-targeting AI has some built-in error incorporated, a player might do better (especially if he is he is using map-contacts; the map-contacts option gives ranges that are error free, along with the angles).
