I can’t fault your ambition but I’d personally recommend using some ‘training wheels’ to just get the hang of how some things work.

I wouldn’t call myself a hard core sub simmer but I’ve been playing SHIII for a long time on and off and recently came to this. The vanilla game was a bit arcade so I graduated to TWOs. It’s a learning curve and I’ve been gradually learning the ropes - lat/long readings, grid system etc. I’m currently struggling with the complexities of convoy intercept, with rather poor results. As a fellow maths idiot I’d take it one step at a time.

Also, AI behavior can be a little screwy and there are bugs that you have to learn and work around. This is a shame (the fault of a buggy release, not the modders) as it’d be great to have as close to realism as possible.

For example, I started off not wanting to use visible hydro/sensor graphics but the escort behavior is not always logical or realistic and it’s been a useful crutch to have that stuff on. Eventually I’ll turn it off.

Just my ten cents. Good luck with your ambitious plan. I will say that personally, the great thing I find with sub sims is it’s not really an action game. I find the cat and mouse, fuel economy, decisions on depth etc etc very meditative and quite zen like.
