Test 2.

Mission "arctic hide and seek" from Sub Command. Mission needed the southern most Victor III added for DW missions. Mission plays one of two ways. 90% of the time, Typhoon and Akula I Improved are north of player. 10% of time, Typhoon with Victor III escort are south of player. In each variant, both Typhoon and escort are moving at 8 kts, roughly at 200 ft.

Tactics: Given the high chance of targets being north, I always set course 015, speed 10 kts and depth 400 ft in Seawolf for each test. If by chance, there is no contact once im within 2000 yds of Polynya, I will launch UUV. If still no contact, I will Ping once on active.

Results:

1. Sub Command with SCX II. Detect Typhoon at 2800 yds on Spherical array. I know escort must be close, since im so close to typhoon. I ready 3 tubes. 2 ADCAPS for the typhoon and 1 for a snapshot. I slow to 5 kts, send out one ping. Akula detected at 4,000 yds. I quickly launch 2 ADCAPS at typhoon and 1 snapshot at the Akula. Typhoon has no time to react and is destroyed by both ADCAPs. Akula counter-fires and I begin to evade. I am quickly pounded by 2 sucessive blasts. ownship 85% damage and I surmise he must have fired 2 Shkvall at me. My own ADCAP begins homing and Akula fires another torpedo at me. With only 4 kts available I await my death, even though I launch CMs and evade anyways. His torpedo misses! (USET-80). He is hit by my ADCAP and sunk! I play out the mission, and attempt to surface through the ice. depth control wont respond, so I rig in the planes and emergency blow! I hammer into 5 feet of ice and dont crash through. I remain trapped and heavily damaged under the ice cap.

2. Dangerous Waters 1.04. Detect Typhoon at 5200 yds on Spherical array. Seems he's in my forward baffle of the TB-16. I turn and gain contact on the TA. I track the typhoon for a few moments and soon detect the Akula at 6400 yds. I again ready 3 torpedoes. I fire 2 at the typhoon and 1 at the Akula. Both targets evade. Typhoon is sunk, Akula counterfires but his torpedoes hit an ice keel and fail. My ADCAP tracks true and sinks him. (fairly easy?)

3. Reinforce Alert 1.35. Typhoon detected at 5,000 yds and Akula detected at 6,000 yds. Both on TB-23. I ready 3 torpedoes and fire. Both target immediatly counter-fire. Myself and both targets evade with multiple CMs. all 3 of my ADCAPS miss and track CMs instead, i'm unable to guide them manually since im evading. (sonar washout). Enemy torpedoes miss. Once I think i'm safe, I slow down and ready 2 more adcaps. This time, I hammer out an active ping. Both targets detected within 5,000 kyds. I fire both ADCAPs quickly. One ADCAP sinks the typhoon (just one?) and my other ADCAP appears to miss. Akula counter-fires and I gamble: stay slow for a bit longer to manually guide my torp to re-aquire. It pays off, ADCAP appears to reaquire and I then begin to evade. Snapping off my towed array, I dive deep and goto flank..tossing out multiple act and pass CMs. Akula sunk and I survive after a 'gunfight'.

4. LWAMI 3.11. Typhoon detected at 5,000 yds, I track him for a while untill I detect Akula at 7,000 yds. I launch 3 ADCAPs and targets evade. No units counter-fire. Typhoon sunk, but Akula evades my ADCAP. it takes some tweaking, but im finally able to reaquire and guide the ADCAP onto him and sink him. (perhaps he was reloading his CM tubes?)

Conclusions. Detection ranges are all quite similar except SC:SCX. In all other cases, the typhoon was detected around 5 Kyds and the Akula just over 6 Kyds. The RA test turned into a real gunfight, which I attribute to highly effective CMs. I was also able to sink the Typhoon in RA with just one ADCAP. (fluke?)
