In case anyone - like me - finds this old thread, trying to play his oldfashioned 688(i) cd-version without disk in drive: There's a workaround that gets it on WinXP, at least. Don't know if it works with a steam version or even on Win7 anyhow. Friend at Seawolves gave it to me long time ago.
So here's just the quote of the .txt-file I found on an old backup
(be sure to backup your registry first, of course):

- Copy contents of the \DATABASE and \MOVIES directories from the CD to your 688 game directory on your
hard drive ("C:\Janes\688(I) Hunter-Killer\Database" and "C:\Janes\688(I) Hunter-Killer\Movies")
- Edit the registry: START > RUN > type REGEDIT > OK
