yes, that is an effective evasion technique.
heading towards a sinking or damaged vessel is a good attempt to deflect detecting-escorts.
keep in mind that the escorts will effectively hunt you until they do not detect you for x number of minutes. the "x" value depends on the mod-set you are using. so, if you need to get away, hiding under a cripple until you can get below the therm is very effective.
