I would actually say, don’t bother with the rec manual. Simply gather the data by matching course and speed on the surface at a distance, as I explain in the link here. The link to the slide in the link below also has links to different slides that may be helpful to you.

Now, depending on what mods you are using, targets can change course and speed, but as long as you have that good solid initial estimate, you can also refine it when close by doing the fixed wire method of timing the target crossing the wire, using an estimate of length. 100 m for smaller targets, 120 for medium or so, 150 for larger. And above all, get close to make any small errors not matter. Under 1000 m if possible.
