Default Back at sea

They call me Uncle E. The name isn't important. Having encountered a bit of boredom with my primary hobby (railroad simulations -- yes, there are such things), I've decided to re-enlist in the Silent Service. Actually, Silent Service II.

I go back to 1985 when my now ex-wife gave me Sid Meyer's original Silent Service sim as a Christmas present. I would go on to aquire Destroyer Escort (remember that one? Probably not), Strike Fleet, Red Storm Rising, and, when my Commodore 64 finally bought the farm, Silent Hunter Commander's Edition for my new Dell.

Then came the books. Ned Beach, Gene Fluckey, Pete Gallantin -- former WWII skippers-turned-authors who explained submarine warfare in a way this former US Air Force enlisted man could actually understand. And there were visits to Chicago to visit U-505 and Muskegon, Michigan to spend some time aboard USS Silversides.

After some time on the beach I've decided to get back into the subsim hobby. Thanks to GOG and my 15 year old Dell Dimension 2400 (still with XP!) I can again go on war patrol. In the words of the late Admiral Fluckey, I'll "Put four cases (cans actually) of beer in the cooler!" and "Splice the main brace!" after sending a maru to the bottom.

Good luck and good hunting.

Uncle E
