I hope this is not a deal killer for me and I have to return to crappy Vista which I know it runs just fine on. (A first time!)

It's not Windows 7 and it's not Vista. Well, it may be, but there is a fix for your problem. See here:

Basically, you need to download (easy to find on Google for free) msvcp71.dll and msvcr71.dll. Put them in your game directory (same location that tvt.exe is). I had to do this in Vista x64 and it's been golden since then.
