Actually, he did try and persuade old Adolf that Operation Barbarossa was not a good idea, but he had fallen out of favour a bit following the Luftwaffe's poor showing in the Battle of Britain. When he couldn't persuade him to not attack Russia, and it was apparent that the invasion of Russia was going to go ahead, he then stupidly did an about face and started making ridiculous promises about things he could achieve, not unlike he did in the Battle of Britain, in fact.
