0408 - Qu.4222AM - "Surface vessel!" Steamer of about 3000ts, bearing 80°, E=2000, on easterly heading, speed 5kn, deck gun on the stern. Turning boat around, in order to fire the Ato. "Battle Stations!"

0421 - Shot with Tube I, G7a, K-a (contact fuse); Running depth 3.75m; Torpedo speed 30kn; Shooter: Ob.Ltnt.z.S. & I.W.O. Emmo MARBACH.
Target distance 850m; Target angle 72°Stbd.; Target speed 5kn; Firing angle 355°.
Own course 355°; Own speed 3kn.
Torpedo is a failure, understeers!

Cmdr.: "The steamer notices the torpedo wake, search lights are illuminated, the stern gun fires once in our general direction but high above the boat."

0422 - "ALARM!" Crash diving to T=50. Running off on general course.

0451 - Tube I reloaded with G7a, K-a. "Dismissed from Battle Stations!".

0505 - Surfaced.

0520 - Outgoing F.T.: To B.d.U.:
At 0421h, attacked single steamer of about 3000ts with Ato in heavy swell. Eel is failure, understeers. Crash diving from deck gun attack. No damages. Qu.4222AM. Continue Op. acc. to F.T.1958/02. Internal eels 7 ETo and 3 Ato. 118.8cbm. E7/6, partly cloudy, light haze, visibility 2-3sm, ~1000mb. - RST -

0622 - Incoming F.T.: From B.d.U.:
RST. Send F.T.0520/03 again. Transmission failure.

0631 - Resent F.T.0520/03.

1101 - Incoming F.T.: From U 99:
Have sunk 2 Auxiliary Cruisers. Total of 4 ships of 41407ts. Out of torpedoes. Return voyage.

0755 - Qu.7255AM - Porcupine Bank

1200 - Qu.7271AM - Days Run: 166.6sm (24h)

1201 - Third position and status request for U.-Prelberg. Boat is presumed lost.

1400 - Norddeich Radio reporting on Kptlt. KRETSCHMER being award with the Oak Leaves to the Knights Cross.

1548 - Incoming contact report from U 99:
Inbound convoy of 30 ships, including several tankers in Qu.6918AL. Escorts are 6 Gunboats. Contact is lost but regained in the evening until morning. During the night, U 28 (Kuhnke) also, makes contact with the convoy.

2349 - Boat cannot travel faster than Half Speed, due to heavy swell.

Boat operating according to new Op.-order 1958/2.
