When the pinging intensity and/or sound volume increases, you went from hunter to hunted. Things are about to become interesting and the odds are stacked against you if you follow a purely passive tactic...

When the DDs are pinging madly and things are getting hot, I've had some success by popping a couple of decoys and crash diving at flank speed while above the thermal layer (during the dive reset depth to max)
  • before reaching the layer ensure the boat is in silent running. Crew should already be at battle stations.
  • closing in on the layer, slow to 2 kt
  • 50 ft below the layer make a 90 degree turn in the best direction to avoid the DDs' path
Good hunting!
