Captain Daniel Gallery, the commander of group 22.3 who had planned and executed the capture of U 505, was an Illinois native and a considerable author in his own right. He proposed the rescue and display of the U-505 to the Museum where it resides today and rescued it from its intended doom as a stripped out target ship in Bermuda. It was towed up the St Lawrence and Great Lakes to its present location in Chicago in 1954 and is the only surviving IXC U-boat in existence today.
