One eye on the speed/course/height bar at all times
And altitude, lots of altitude because if you do go off course for a minute you can usually just about get yourself back on course again in time to get within visual range if you're at altitude. Obviously if you're low level then you'll have a harder time finding the island.
Although if your name is Charles C.Taylor, forget it.
