Razark + 1
What Razark said.
Think the minimum distance is like 5-6k feet away standard, not sure what that translates into per meters... but any way, & that's with dead calm to moderately calm wave action, at best. Waves above moderate & you seriously start to lose torp lock, having to hope for a good lock & launch of your torps.
You can bump your depth up a wee bit, but in seriously heavy chop, you run the risk of broaching & being exposed... but... that's the chances you take, skippering a sub. Bad during daylight hours..
If you are lucky, and there is no moon, is darker than the armpit of a gundark, & is raining somewhat.. you may.. get away with it or be lucky enough to just run a surface attack. Which is other option for doing a torp attack.
Myself, I go for remaining unseen, as is possible... but... that's just Me.
Hopefully, this info helps...
